Hello everyone. We recently lost our companion of 12 years and will be looking for a new dog when we can think straight. We know we will get a small friendly one as it must also be able to fly in coach on rare occasion. But in planning a long trip in the fall to the north east we are seeing some restrictions that cause me to ask what else should I be prepared for. I am seeing that I must have the vacination papers and pay a $50. non refundable deposit on some CG's. Is there anything else I should be prepared for? I would hate to drive to a place in the woods and be turned away. Don't get me wrong, I see nothing wrong with leash laws and picking up after yourself but how picky does this stuff get?

I no longer have any problems traveling with my dog anywhere, be it land, air or sea. I trained my dog to be a Service Dog. In accordance with the American Disabilities Act she and I have rights. Visit: http://www.ada.gov/svcanimb.htm
http://morebarn.net/serviceanimal/index.htm
and for a service dog badge visit:
http://www.clevengercreations.com/dog_badge.htm
Service animals are not required to wear vests and a badge is adequate, cheaper, and cooler.

I carry a copy of the ADA Bulletin with me for people who try to charge me for my animal, ask for a deposit, refuse me admittance with my animal to any facility. Those who think they can threaten or intimidate me are told by me to call a cop. Most police will ask 4 questions; (1) Is that your pet - Answer NO (2) Is that a Service Dog - Answer Yes. (3) Is that your Service Dog - Answer Yes (4) What does he do - Answer; He alerts me to my medical condition/He assists me with my medical condition.
Some dumb people, including law enforcement may ask: What is your medical condition or how does he alert/assist you with your medical condition - Answer; You are in violation of the ADA and subject to financial penalty because that is private and personal information.

What we are finding this year is the 40# limit. Some CC's charge $3.00 a day for a dog.
We've eliminate those as fast as we find them.
Our Shepard weighs 85#.

I had no idea this was going on anywhere. I recently encountered a KOA that does not allow an Ex Pen. I no longer do business with them. The same should go for the campgrounds you mention. They need to figure out who pays their bills.

Just a few irresponsible dog owners will ruin the camping for the rest of us. All we can do is do the right thing and make sure the campground owners knows that there are a lot more responsible owners than the irresponsible ones.

I do not have a problem telling some one with a dog if they are doing something wrong...like not picking up the poop or letting the dog run without a leash. Next stop is the managers office.

Hello pet lovers. We love our dogs and take them everywhere with us. We are also camp owners and have seen all sorts of bad pet parents.
People with attitude like DoggieDaddy (didn't say he picked up)and people who would never think of leaving doggie dew for someone else to pick up and the ones who feel so bad about the non pickeruppers that they pick up everything they see. Those are the people who hate that a few are ruining it for all.
We used to accept all sizes of dogs until I got tired of scraping it off my back when I mowed. The tires flipped it up on my back. I got tired of the non-dog owners complaining about tracking it into their 500 thousand dollar coach. I got tired of campers complaining that their kids stepped in it. The smell etc. Sick dogs carry bad stuff in their dew and it might make "my" dog sick. So Please pick up.
We are sorry that we can no longer accept dogs over 25lbs. We stress over and over that owners must pick up. If you let your dog run loose, how do you see where he poops.
We were loosing campers because we didn't have restrictions. So please pick up after your pets. That inclused outside cats too.
We love dogs they are not responsible for bad parents.

We rarely get to stay at campgounds. We travel with our 4 mastiffs. We always pick up our poo as well as others that inconsiderate people have left behind. Our dogs are never off leash and are usually in the MH laying quietly except when someone wants to pet the big dog...

Personally from what I have seen it is RARELY the large or giant dog owner who doesn't pick up but the ones with little "fifi" because they think that little mess doesn't really matter! See it all the time at dog shows and parks! Believe me you would know when a mastiff or other giant breed dog leaves some poo.......

D--

sorry to hear about your loss! It is painful but a new pet does help the heart heal.
Our prayers are with you.

We have stayed at a couple of places recently that had you sign a rule sheet acknowledging the rules and that everyone in your group would abide by the rules ....or you were out and no refund.

Number one rule pertained to dog's Size, leash and picking up poop.

One place listed a rule about cutting through other camp sites.

These rules have to be written and forced on people when they do not have the sense to use common sense.

You would be welcome at our camp, I would make exception.. You have a good additude toward cleaning after your pet. We have made exceptions by how people receive our regulations.
There all all types of people and pets. We had a guy come in late one night with a Swiss Mountain Dog, begging to stay because he couldn't drive another mile, Promising to pick up after his dog. When we were checking the sites the next day we found 2 of the biggest piles I have ever seen.
It has been our experience in 15 years that many familys with children have big dogs. They leave it up to the kids to walk the dog. Most of them just let the dog run loose all over the camp with no cleanup. Another example is the expensive coach owner who lets his dog run loose while he is hooking up. The best one is the guy who opens the door at 6AM, turns his dog out to run all over the camp and poop. calls him back in when ready to leave. That way they can blame it on to the guy next door.
These are just a few of the people who have been here and are ruining it for everyone.
I think the answer is camper self enforcement. If we are in another camp and see it happen, I say something to them. Sometimes makes them mad only because they are embarrased to get caught.

My Wife an I travel with our Irish Wolfhound. She leaves a pile that a small dog could clime unless there is a horse around the campground owners would know who to go to. I would never think of not picking up after her. (even if it means renting a backhoe)

This summer we were staying at a campground in DE when a Akita from another site got loose and attacked our girl. She was ok and a off duty DE state cop was going to shoot it turns out the dog was snapping and growling at people all week. They were staying for another two weeks I told them to get the dog out of the campground or I would go to the office and call the local animal control. Thay left that night.

I make sure I ALWAYS make "eye contact" with someone who is walking their dog...and the dog is 'taking care of business'. I can tell you of one instance that one family had no bags with them. I made eye contact..and the next time around I noticed that they went back to pick up after their dog. (I made sure I made eye contact again - with a smile on my face!)
