I've been switching channels to the AKC/Eukanuba Natl Championship 2008 from Long Beach on the APL channel tonight and notice that it continues tomorrow morning for a few more hours.

Hi Guys,
It started about 2 hours later than our cable schedule stated here in Amado last night. It continued until midnight when "Best in Show" finally finished. I had to take a nap in the middle of it. I was completely annoyed by all of the same commercials they kept playing over and over and over.
Animal Planet usually airs the dogshow a couple times at least through the week. I won't tell you the "Best in Show" dog so as to not spoil it for you.
BTW I'm still kind of jealous of you two going over to CA. for the Ralley and also hanging out at Quartzite. Our agenda was pretty cool too and we met up with some old Alaskan friends in Palm Springs after the Bob Hope Golf Classic.
We're still thinking about going to the Scottsdale shows but may be scared off by the price of parking there. We'll see if a friend from CA will be be staying with us and split the costs.
Cheers,
Tom and Jo

I have been looking for a friend for my Lab, Moli. I watched a Dog Show on TV last night. Maybe it was the one you are talking about. My DH got a headache because I want one of each. Especially the Mastiffs, well the Golden too. Then there was a wolfhound...and so on.
How many big dogs can we take in one RV? My Moli needs a buddy - she loves boys - and I am keeping an eye out for a mature, well trained (my hubby has MS and I am afraid a dog with too much enthusiasm would be difficult for him to manage on a leash) friend for her. She is a black Lab, about 7 and a sweetheart who is going to be a therapy dog visiting nursing homes and hospitals when we get back from Alaska. She was a stray, dumped off at my friend's house, but a blessing for us and our cat.

The Sealyham terrier won best in show at Eukanuba. Westminster starts Monday evening. YOu can actually watch the breeds being judged at the www.westminsterkennelclub.org site. They list the times that the different breeds show and last year they had video of each breed showing.
I'm sure that Akita will be on again. She is gorgeous and we have shown against her MANY times.

Does anyone else fall in love with every dog in the show?

Thanks Karen (or is it Jeffrey ??)
I love watching the dog shows. I always root for the breeds I have. We had an akita that we lost to cancer two years ago. I always love to see an akita shown well because so many people consider them dangerous and scary. (Ours was a huge baby).
I've never seen a Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier make it to the top 3 in best of group, although I keep rooting. Now we have the miniature schnauzers to root for too. It seems to me (just as a viewer obviously) that there are some breeds that just get more respect/air time than others. When I am watching on tv and they go through the group they always seem to talk about the same breeds. They never really have much to say as to the background/temperment of my breeds.
Are you showing dogs in the Westminster show ?? If so...good luck and I will watch for you. Are you the handler also ??

Shannone and Chad,
They do seem to always highlight certain breeds but I think mainly because often those are the ones that are the highest in the rankings. Also ones that the announcers own
I know after you win at Eukanuba they grab you and do a quick interview to get some interesting info to say about your dog while it shows on TV. I would assume they do the same at Westminster.
No we did not attend and probably will never show a dog there. I really have no desire as it is VERY stressful for the dog. they are "benched" which means they must sit on a bench for the entire day while the public walks by. They are not allowed outside to do business but must go to fenced areas with sawdust that usually smell SO bad. I remember at a show in Houston, Surf refused to pee in one of those--it was actually funny because here was this 220 lb dog, lifting his legs so high cause he hated stepping on it.
We have a handler who shows Surf. It is very political plus I am just too small to stop him if another dog attacked. He was attacked at a show in the ring and our handler did a spectacular job from preventing Surf from attacking back! I never could have stopped him.
So that is a large reason why. I did get the Championships on almost all our mastiffs and friend's dogs like a Flat coat, French bulldogs, etc.
I am sorry to hear about your Akita! Losing them is so darn painful but living with them for as many years as we have them is SO worthwhile!
Karen

The dog show is in Albany this week. I wish I could go. I didn't know that they were so rough on the poor dogs.
Sorry about your Akita Shannone and Chad. They are such nice dogs and good companions. We have one who comes to visit people in the hospital where I used to work.
Karen, are you mastiffs wanna-be lap dogs? I am contemplating taking one from a guy who has to move to Hawaii. He is a regular couch potato and loves company. Are they good with other dogs normally?

Full Moon over Salem,
Yes my mastiffs are SERIOUS lap dog wanna-bes. Yesterday while watching Westminster 2 of them climbed on the couch with Jeffrey and laid down--he was surrounded
They are great dogs--generally mellow but will guard their people! No one messes with you when you have a mastiff!
They are often good with other dogs--just depends on the dog. We have a female who does not play well with others--large female dogs usually. She is ok with smaller dogs and most males. Most of the time they ignore other dogs. It's the little dogs who want to pick a fight with them!!! That is the reason we NEVER go to dog parks because some smaller dogs have the Napoleanic complex and will try to start something. None of my dogs will walk away from a fight but most will not start one.
Sparkle, the young one, adores other dogs!
So it just depends on how he was raised and socialized and his genetic background.
Karen

Thanks for your reply. Paul brought Gus over to meet Moli and they loved each other. As big as he is he seemed to all Moli to be boss. He was allowed to run loose in the yard under our supervision and he and Moli stayed within the boundaries. I hope I get to keep him. He is such a sweetheart, obedient, walks well on leash and Ron can handle him well (he has MS and dogs have given him trouble in the past). He likes the MH but he and Moli will have to settle which one gets the bunk. Paul said he travels well, but loves to eat. Anything. Anywhere at anytime. No more leaving goodies around. Gus is huge, I think he could probably drink out of the kitchen sink.
Paul will bring him over and leave him with us for a weekend to see how things go. Gus our cat is unhappy. Very unhappy, but Gus the dog was gently and did not try to intimidate him. Gus, although a large cat, would be puppy granola to that guy.
Again, thanks for your response.
