Getting a Dog Out the Emergency Escape Window

One of my biggest fears is a fire in the RV. To that end I have made emergency window props to hold the window open and have bought several additional fire extinguishers from MAC the Fire Guy that are dispersed in the RV with two near the escape window in the bedroom. I also open the window every year and dust the seal with baby powder so it opens quickly and easily. Note, if you haven't opened your window recently you should as the first time I opened it there was considerable force required and it took a few minutes to get open.

One of the things I have been struggling with is how to get our Golden Retriever out the window. I am thinking I would lower him out the window but am not sure what can be used to lower him that I can get on him quickly. Have looked at the Rescue Tech Laika Dog Harness (Rescue Tech Laika Harness) but not sure how quickly you can get this on the dog.

What have others done to prepare for this situation?

If you have a fire in the rv, the dog will leap out the window. If he hesitates, boost him out. You won't have time to fool with some harness arrangement. I have two standard size Poodles so I have thought of this as well. I also bought extra fire extinguishers and a decent smoke alarm over the bed.

As much as I would like to think he might, I can't depend on that so am thinking I need alternatives.

"Alternatives" would most likely get you both burned or possibly worse. Hang onto his collar and drop him out the window with you right behind !

You won't have very much time if a fire starts , certainly not enough to put your pet in any type of holster, force him out the window and drop him by the collar if the door isn't available. Just watch any video on how fast these things burn.

Having seen several RV fires, and just how fast they burn...

Dog and wife get chucked out the window, NOW... Then I jump.

I'd much rather heal up from bruises, and maybe a broken bone or two than be burned up.

Thanks, I did come to that conclusion. I have made two extra window props for a total of three just in case one drops out as someone goes out the window. Stored directly above the window for quick access. Window is opened twice a year and dust the foam seal with baby powder so it opens easily and quickly. I also have an old roll mat that can go over the window lip to slide out easier and provide some padding. Two small fire extinguishers stored near the window to help fight back any fire as we escape if needed. Bought the multi extinguisher kit from MAC the Fire Guy that he recommends. Have them stationed throughout the coach including a 5 pounder.

Fire, and a front tire blowout, are my two biggest concerns. Hopefully I never need any of this stuff.

There is no alternative. Open the window and throw the dog out and follow. You have zero chance of keeping the fire away with an extinguisher and less chance of hooking up any kind of harness. The smoke will incapacitate you in seconds. There may not even be open flames but the materials used in RVs burn with a toxic smoke. In seconds you will be blinded and gasping for air. If you or the dog break a bone hitting the ground it is still better than the alternative. Get out without delay.
