I've always had dogs .even took one to college. I loose a piece of my heart everytime I have to say the final farewell but gain a little more room for the next one.
I can't imagine not having dogs.

We got Hershey from a shelter in Florida. Thom thought he might be allergic but we got a cat anyway. Then after about 2 yrs having Hershey Thom got allergy tested and yes he is allergic. Well, a few years later we moved to MI and a few years later Hershey passed. It affected us both a lot. I thought we had decided no more cats but within 6 months we got Gascap from a shelter in MI. We've now had Gascap for about 4 or 5 years and Thom's allergies are getting worse so we have now decided that it would be better to give Gascap to a different home and this time no more cats. Neither of us want to go without a him but sometimes it's better all around to find a better home.
And yes this time I have talked Thom into No More Cats.

To answer your question, yes we would and did get one within hours of loosing George & Shadow. Our view is that the years we had George & Shadow we gave them 100% of our lives, when that day came we needed to give back and give another 100% to another that needed a home.
We talk about them every day and look through the pictures and videos every day.
You have to do what you feel is right.

At my age the question is: Will my pet find another owner after I'm gone?
I actually have 3 decent younger folks who would make good family for him.
Here he is on guard duty in the MH.............

That is a excellent and responsible question. I think about that with my In-Laws being in their 70's

When we had our last old dog PTS at the age of 17 we said no more pets, for all the usual reasons. After 2 years the house seemed so lifeless, like a tomb. So silent and so empty. There was a void, a vacuum. Something was missing.... ... somehow we ended up with four cats and the house is again alive! Sometimes noisy. The void has been filled.

Geez dude,,, now I need a hanky,,,, can't see...... We have our Will papers on the table, and have already talked about that....
We lost Shelby in Feb,, a 10 yr old rescue Dane.. Our boy Oliver, 6 1/2 yr old Dane was lost without her. We tried to be a playmate, made our rv trip to AZ this year with just him, but he wasn't the same.. Neither were we.. I still miss my first three Danes,, We now have a new animal shelter puppy, was supposably a Dane mix, but now not so sure... doesn't matter, she is stuck with us... They are starting to play together, walk the yard together,,, These are our "kids" ... DW has 2 two legged kids, but mine have four legs... They break your heart when they are gone,, but the love and companionship they provide is priceless...

Yes Gene, they are getting along better everyday... Never a problem (yet), but you know it takes time to make a good friend.... Funny to watch them run in the 2 acre yard... He is faster, but she can dodge him,,, "sometimes" ... 150 lbs vs 50 lbs ,,, not a good thing in a collision.. Nice to be young ,, she just pops back up. It takes me much longer now days....

We lost our Maddygirl in December 2012. Didn't even know she was sick. Two months later we lost Jake he had been on medicine for Addison's then he developed diabetes. It was a very bad time for us, we still had one pup Zacky but he was missing his buddies of 10 years, as were we. We decided to rescue a dog. We got him from SAFE (save animals from euthanasia). He has been a joy and has made our grief bare able. We saved a dog he has helped comfort us, and Zacky. We still miss and will always remember my Maddygirl and Jakey Jones. Toby is making new memories for us.

What interesting posts. Hearts broken with the loss of our beloved pets. New joy gained with the addition of needed adoption. Each of us become so attached and I know that some people might not understand and some times I have to ask myself if we just carry our relationship too far beyond the norm.
Well... ours, each of ours is a special relationship that is built with years of faithfulness, love, loyalty and trust. I certainly dread the day our Duke may pass but until that time we keep making memories and caring for each other.

pets
we lost both of our dogs about one & 1/2 years ago, blondie and barney, barney loved her so, he died within about 3 months of her, we said we were not going to get anymore pets, but within a few months i adopted a little FOXY, TERRIER MIXED FROM A POUND AND THEN ABOUT 2 MONTHS LATER My HUSBAND WANTED ANOTHER LAB. WE NOW SAY AS BUSY AS WE ARE, THAT WE WOULD NOT DO THIS AGAIN, BUT I AM SURE AS MUCH AS WE LOVE ANIMALS WE WOULD.

Yes we would and have. If you have given love and affection to your pet, played with them and provided them with a home, not just a safe place to rest, and made sure they were healthy and well fed, how can you refuse the same gift to another pet when the time comes, as we know it will, and your loved pet passes?
