Kitty claws and leather upholstery

Hey all...

DW wants to being kitties into our soon to be brand new coach.

All I can see are claws digging into the leather, leatherette or ultra leather...whatever one wishes to call it.

Regardless, Daddy needs ideas on how to protect the leather outside of using those plastic covers we used to see at Grand Ma's house or simply getting rid of kitties: Neither are an option!

Any ideas, clever or not, are appreciated!

HAD leather furniture

HAD cats

Both pass tense

ONE quick dash across back of couch and there were many, many little pucker holes INSTANTLY that grew over time

Furniture was ruined.........

Short of COMPLETELY covering the leather............not going to stop any damage from their claws
ONE quick DASH was all it took

If completely covered........why have leather furniture

We have two kitties. Chair covers on the couch and driver/passenger captain chairs. We have two euro recliners - they have not been a problem with claws so no covers on them. You won't eliminate 100% of the problem, but I think high 90s%. The remaining we just mark up to the cost of having our fur kids with us.

Have a favorite scratching post along for them. Train them to use it and not anything else.

A dash pad is a wonderful thing. They like to spend a lot of time there when camped watching the world.

Our kitties travel in large travel cases for their safety. The cases ride bungee corded to the two reclining chairs.

We have these on our sofa at home and my very expensive recliner.

http://a.co/6kXgvAA

They are wash machine friendly and come in many colors.

There is always declawing but I understand that is controversial.

Great ideas!

I like the Soft Paw idea but our one cat, Fat Cat, would probably eat them.

The covers look very nice and that is most likely the way we will go.

Amazing how much a $20 kitty can really cost you!

I am not a huge cat guy but we love the little monsters.

Their back feet are good at poking holes too. Tried softpaws on my cats and one of them pulled so hard on his claws getting them off he bled.

Real leather holds up better than pleather against claws but it will still get tore up.

Please don't declaw. Had a cat that broke his back falling off the cat tower awkwardly cause he tried to use his claws and fell not feet first. He came to us declawed.

I have 8 rescue cats and only 1 won't let me clip all his claws in one sitting. Claw clipping really helps. I just put my left arm around them take a paw and squish the beans until the pokey bits pop out and snip. No restraining needed. The one that freaks out will let me clip a few if he has been out cold asleep. lol

Yup, same/similar to what we have. Bought from QVC. They have several to select from online - chair type, color, etc.

Those things drive me insane, always pulling out of place when sat on and at least one of my cats would turn it into a blanket fort.

Full slip covers might be an option but on some the fabric is thin and can get poked through.

One thing I wanted to mention, kittens tear around more than older cats. Maybe a rescue around 8yrs old might be a less destructive option.

Quite often declawed kitties end up in a rescue or at the shelter, if you make it known that you have an interest in one they could reach out when they get one in. We have had several in our units over the past few months.

I just use covers on my leather furniture in the house, just have not had an issue in the motorhome.

We just live with the holes/pokes, etc until we can replace the recliners and couch. They are only 7 months into full time use (original owner), and already the springs in the seats of the recliners have gone bad. And neither of us are overweight.

We do clip claws cause I will not declaw.

DW is very handy with a sewing machine and on our Class A and our previous Class C she has custom made covers for the couch and " hoods" for the top of the captains chairs. Along with a blanket for the dash and the cats favorite scratching post, we've faired fairly well. As a previous poster said you won't prevent 100% but you can minimize the damage.
We've traveled with as many as 2 cats & 2 dogs and currently have one of each.

Kitties have such short little lives compared to us, I let them do whatever they want. When I trade in the coach I will replace everything they destroyed - I already have a folder with part numbers ready to go. I'm sure if I had a $300K coach I would feel much different, but for a silly Bay Star there's no point in stressing about anything that happens.

Softpaws on amazon and real glue not what comes with them.

All of my furr babies have worn them at some point. After awhile, they seemed to learn either the claw covers or not to scratch.
