I've looked back through all the topics on this forum and thought it might be a good idea to prepare a list of various things we could pack into a First Aid Kit for our pets.

We have one in the RV for our scrapes and cuts, but honestly I don't think about what COULD happen to our pets on a trip and what things we have around the house that could help in an emergency until we could get our pet(s) to the nearest vet office.

Let's start our KIT now! Reply post and I'll add to the list below:

Here's some categories: upset tummy, ate something they shouldn't have, runny bottoms, bites, scrapes, burns.....

Come on now! I'm not the only one with a remedy! Do we have any RV'ing Vets out there who can give us some ideas???

Sandy

ITEMS NEEDED FOR THE PET FIRST AID KIT:

1. Flour: great to stop bleeding if you don't have a styptic pencil or powder.

2. Pepto Bismol for doggie upset tummies and runs.

3. Peroxide to force a throw up in case the precious critter eats some he should not.How much? A tsp or tblsp?

4. Vet wrap - flexible wrap you can buy at the pet store that is great to wrap cuts, etc. It "sticks" to itself so there's no need for tape.

5. A stop itch or like rub

6. Baby aspirin

7. Anti-hystimine (Benedryl)

Flour? Never heard that one. My vet has recommended regular Pepto Bismol for doggie upset tummies and runs. I don't have any special medicine for the dogs other than their treats and vitamins.

Some items we have found useful....
-Peroxide to force a throw up in case the precious critter eats some he should not.
-Vet wrap
-A stop itch or like rub
-Baby aspirin
-Styptic Power...works better than flour to stop bleeding.
-Pepto Bismol tables
-Anti-hystimine

I am sure there is more, but this pretty much covers what we carry.

These are great items to keep in a Pet 1st Aid Kit!

Several years ago we were camping over in Kerrville when our Brittany (God rest her soul) pulled a toenail completely out on the steps as she was coming down them. I immediately called a vet in the area who said to put flour on it to stop the bleeding - it worked! Not as good as a styptic pencil or the powder you can get a the doggie stores, but when an emergency happens you use what you have!

Keep those ideas coming!

sugar works good too for stopping the bleeding.
For allergies dogs can take benedryl and also I know they can take claritin as my Bandit is on claritin.

Thanks Cameo23! I guess it might be a good idea to check with a vet at home to determine amounts of over-the-counter human drugs that can be given to the animal. I know I've given my Shelties benedryl, but it was in small doses.

I am an acupunturist and Chinese herbalist so our pet medicine chest has more alternative OTC items in it.......... A few drugs though as one never knows.

A few of the things we have in our pet medicine chest:
Ascripton--better than aspirin as it is coated and much better for their tummies..
Pepto bismol
Benedryl
Antibiotics--we always keep some cephalexin on hand.
Vet wrap
Peroxide--I gave our mastiff pup about 2 tablespoons a few months ago when she ate a latex glove. She weighed about 80 lbs then.
Traumeel--by Heel a homeopathic remedy that works really well for trauma pain.
Calms forte--a calming homeopathic med for animals--we use it to calm them down--great for insomnia for humans too
Rescue Remedy--again for stressful situations, new environments, etc. great stuff!
Ice packs in freezer-never know when you will need them--great for bites, stings and ouchies.
Cayenne pepper also stops bleeding but hurts like ............well you can imagine but stops bleeding FAST. I think I like the flour idea better.
I have some other herbal formulas in ours--for upset tummies, for diarrhea, etc but also keep the mainstream items in there --for others. People at dogshows always ask us for things to help their dogs

Great topic for discussion!

where can I get Calms Forte and Rescue Remedy in or near Houston?? I'd like to take my cat in the RV, but she was a wreck by the time we got to our destination (wouldn't come out from under the bed the entire weekend, had 2 "accidents").
Thanks!

Poor Kitty! You can get them at any good health food stores--do you have Whole Foods or Sunflower markets? Most GNCs do NOT carry these.
Of course you can also order online--I think maybe Vitaminshoppe.com might carry both.

Best of luck with kitty--they get so much more fixed in "their" Camping with the 5 gets a bit crowded even with the 3 slideouts

Our older dog, Gizmo, limps every so often so I was told to give her Buffered asperin. I give her 1/4-1/2 a tablet. Buffered asperins aren't seen all over the shelf like other brands but I did see a store brand and we always bring some in case her arthritis. She weighs about 10# so a larger dog would probably need a larger dose.
We also take pepto bismol for Bandit, the Japanese chin. We found he has a milk allergy so if he gets ahold of a piece of cheese he gets a dose of pepto bismol for that.
Bonine is also good for travel sickness for dogs which Bandit gets but a nice walk every few hours at a rest area works too.
Eye drops would be another thing to take. Gadget, the pug, gets gunk in her eyes and the vet told me to use over the counter eye drops along with her prescribed medication.
Cotton balls are good to bring, we use that for the crease under Gadgets nose, she has alot of creases!
Tweezers would be good to bring for burrs or anything else that gets on them.
I think that covers it!
Sue
