Our dog getting away has always been something we pay attention to. It's usually not a problem for us. We have trained her to not exit the car or RV on her own. We have to pick her up and set her on the ground. It's a pain having to physically place her on the ground every time but it keeps her from running off.
The two commands we have drilled into her head are "drop it" and to come when called or whistled for. She does both without hesitation. She'll drop a steak if I tell her to and instantly come toward me when called. Both commands have come in handy on many occasions. She's 11 now so she pretty much has the commands down pat. But she is a Jack Russell.
And when all else fails, we make sure she is always wearing a collar with our phone numbers on it when we travel.
A couple of years ago we were at a campground in CO in bear country and a guy let his Border Collie out on her own to do her business around 10 at night. He was planning to leave the next day. We left a week later and he was still there searching for his dog. I don't know if he ever found her.
