Nova Scotia - Newfoundland FERRY issue

I'm concerned about the 8/9 hour [that's the shorter one] crossing. As I read the rules at the ferry operations WEB Site .... pets MUST be kept in your vehicle AND you cannot visit your vehicle (to pee them etc.) or better yet stay with them. The truck Ford f250 CC is OK for a couple of hours ..... the 5th wheel with slides in ?? Not happy .... anyone do the trip with a couple of medium size (70 lb) dogs. In site?
Thanks.

our longest was the ship Ferry between Haines Alaska and Skagway Alaska, with the motorhome down in the 'belly' of the ship, but only about an hour or so. The dog stayed in the coach's bathroom, as she normally does for sometimes hours at the time when we're gone anyway. She can hold it fine.

now, for 8 or 9 hours, if that's what you're saying, I'm sure there's ways to handle it within your RV, but I'm also sure there's good reasons the ferry doesn't allow vehicle owners down into the belly of the ship.

Otherwise......pet is in truck r 5vr and NO visits allowed

yup ... options are as below. looking for someone that has tried it.

OPTION 1: Transport Pet in Vehicle

You may leave your pet in your vehicle for the duration of the crossing. This is the recommended option for most dogs and cats. (Please visit the FAQ section to determine if this option is best for you and your pet.)

If you choose this option, we ask that you notify us upon check in. You should also request a ‘Pet On Board’ card for display in your vehicle window (See sample below). This card will identify your vehicle as having a pet inside and will assist us during the boarding process.

For the safety and security of our passengers, no one is permitted on the vehicle deck during the crossing. Therefore, you are not permitted to visit your pet until the vessel has arrived in port.

The Port aux Basques-North Sydney ferry service has a sailing duration of approximately 6 to 8 hours, while the Argentia-North Sydney route is 14 to 16 hours. Due to the length of the Argentia crossing, pet owners are strongly urged to cross on the Port aux Basques ferry service. However, should you decide to travel on the Argentia route, pet owners are responsible for judging if Option #1 is best suited for their pet.

OPTION 2: Reserve Onboard Kennel Space

You may reserve a space for your own pet travel carrier. For your pet’s safety, the pet travel carrier must be constructed of hard plastic (collapsible wire or soft sided carriers are not permitted).
  • The price for reserving a space is $16.75 + HST for all routes.
  • The size and configuration of kennel stowage spaces varies from vessel to vessel. In the event of a vessel switch, your space may not be guaranteed. If a vessel switch occurs and we are unable to provide space in the kennel stowage area, then you will have the option to select an alternate sailing or leave your pet in your vehicle.
  • Space is limited and must be booked in advance through our Reservations Office at 1-800-341-7981 or online.
The kennel stowage area is intended for longer crossings or for pets with special needs (please visit our FAQ section for advice on whether your pet might benefit from travelling in the kennel stowage area).

For the safety of our passengers and crew, all pets must be transported to the kennel stowage area inside a pet travel carrier. It is your responsibility to transport your pet from your vehicle to this area. Our staff will gladly provide directions. Walked or carried dogs must be muzzled and leashed. Failure to muzzle and leash your pet while outside of your vehicle may result in your reservation being cancelled.

Please inform our staff at check-in that you have reserved a kennel stowage space for your pet’s travel carrier. Your vehicle will be placed accordingly during the loading process.

Each kennel stowage area includes a relief center where pets may relieve themselves. Pet owners are responsible to clean up after their pet. The area contains disposable plastic bags and a shovel-type tool, along with a trash receptacle and water.

Pet travel carriers must comply with the following measurements (please measure your travel carrier's height, width and depth prior to reserving the kennel stowage space). Please select the size which most closely matches that of your pet travel carrier. It is your responsibility to provide a lock for your pet travel carrier.
