My 12-year-old Goldie has a touch of arthritis and has been on Metacam for a couple of years now. I will do anything in my power to keep him feeling good, so this is not strictly a financial debate. My question here is about the various on-line outlets for pet meds. I looked up 100ml bottles of this drug on four different sites and the prices varied from $59-$69 per bottle. My vet charged me $134 this morning. I told them I wanted a written scrip so I could order my own but they refused to give me one and justified their refusal by saying that the on-line suppliers were selling bogus medications.

My question is this: do any of you have experience, positive or negative, with ordering on-line pet meds? Let it be known that I would NEVER knowingly harm my Goldie, but the markup on this drug seems awfully high.

Comments? Suggestions?

My first response to you is to 'get a new vet'.
My vet would provide prescriptions to me for on-line meds (we have goldens too).

We lost our 13 year old golden a year ago. She had a touch of arthritis for the last several years of her life. My vet suggested Cosequin, which is Glucosamine & Condroitin. I bought the first supply from him, and afterwards purchased it off the web at the cheapest supplier (no prescription needed). To the day she died, she was as limber as can be. I highy recommend it.

Do not use substitutes. Cosequin is as pure as it comes!

Hi Guys, we have also had our share of geriatrics over the years. I have found a wonderful company in Canada called West Coast Naturals. I take the same joint meds as our dogs, really good stuff.

Ron, I can understand some of what yer Vet is trying to say, but not all suppiers are bogus.
Vets are so expensive these days.

After a follow-up discussion with my vet where I explained the options available, he agreed to provide the needed prescriptions. He also indicated that they would meet the prices of other meds like heartworm and Frontline flea protection. Fair enough in my book.

Thanks for the tips Jestme13, I'll check into that type med and see what my vet thinks is best.

I'd be looking for a new vet...an honest one. Also we order our older dogs meds from Drs. Foster and Smith. For the Frontline and Heart Guard, we use www.petshed.com.

Our vet does the same thing. If one hasn't discussed this with his/her vet, it might be an opportunity for significant savings on pet meds.
