I have come across some campgrounds that have separate areas for "pet owners." Once I said yes we had a cat when making our reservation and we were put in a pet-only area that was the farthest away from the campground amenities, and we had to put up with more barking and the nearby doggie park. When I asked why, with only a cat, did we have to stay in the pet-restricted area, I was told that someone might be allergic and cat dander could escape through our windows or doors. Really!!

Our cat has never been outside and will not be. I have adopted the opinion when traveling that pets means dogs. When I am asked, I say we have no pets. Am I wrong?

It doesn't matter what we think, it only matters what the campground thinks.

You are correct. We have indoor cats as well and we always say that we have no pets. We have never had an issue with any campground or fellow camper, ever.

Dogs, cats, mice, birds, yes they all pets. Do some types bother others more, yes. But I would hate to set up and have someone drop the dime on me that I have a cat and make me move. Other than that to each his own as to how much information you give the CG.

Yes, cats are pets. My DW and I have never had children and our cats have been our babies and children our whole married lives. They mean as much to us as most people's children do, but they are pets.

You can imaging that no campground owner has ever heard a lie from a camper. Many have told them their dog is quiet or my cat doesn't go outside yet they do. It's hard to tell who is going to tell the truth and who is going to lie, so they have to have rules and follow them.

Finally, we had a friend that could tell if our cats were close to us before meeting him, his eyes would turn red and swell, he was very allergic to the cat dander.

We travel with a dog and a cat. The cat is strictly indoors, even at home. When we're asked about pets, I don't mention the cat. Some campgrounds charge extra for pets and it seems ridiculous to pay, even a couple dollars, for a pet that has no impact on the park. And even though I understand why a park would try to keep pets in a certain area and have pet-free area for travelers w/o pets, if the pet area was as you described as being inferior to the other area--creating the feeling of being discriminated 'against' for having pets--I would try to avoid that park in future travels.

If the policy says pets it means pets,if it says dogs then it means dogs. Not very confusing.

Not trying to hijack the thread, but how does a pet owner handle the litter box on the road?

Not so sure. I have seen postings describe "pet restrictions" and then go on to say no vicious breeds or animals over 20 pounds. Now if I had a bobcat, then I would concur.

I am not trying to be a smart--- about this. I do want to be sensitive to real issues. I just think that most rules regarding pets are set with dogs in mind. We once traveled with a dog, and I am well aware they are much higher maintenance. And our cat's meowing has not, to our knowledge, bothered anyone or kept them up at night. Regarding allergies, I personally know only one person who is allergic to cats, and they know how to avoid the problem. I know many more who are allergic to tobacco smoke, but the same lady who said our cat might affect someone had no reply when I asked if they segregated smokers by site.

I have been more annoyed with squawking parrots then I have by barking dogs. I bet the people with the parrots don't tell the RV Parks about them when checking in.

We're not cat people but if I had one I would deny having a pet also, especially if I thought that I would be discriminated against in a way that inconvenienced us. We don't see cats (or any other pets except for dogs for that matter) and if they're there I'm sure their owners don't let them out unattended; if they did, though, they at least don't bark, howl or cry. We camp primarily in Florida and, although I could be wrong about this, all state run campgrounds allow dogs. Most of these dogs are small and seem to spend most of their time inside their RV's or are closely attended to by their owners; these are no problem. However, the last time we stayed at one of our favorite state campgrounds in north Fla we had 2 Rhodesian Ridgebacks on one side with a Pit Bull and dachshund on the other. Across from us was a Blue Tick hound. They were all nice and friendly but it was such an overall aggravation that we became convinced that campers with dogs should be relegated a special and well monitored location far away from dogless sites. The way it will work though is we will use more of the generally less desirable private campgrounds and allow these government owned properties to develop as dog parks. Please, no offense to most dog owners; I have owned many and believe them truly to be peoples' best friends.

We have a cat who walks every day (and in the evening) so there is no denying that she is here. Interestingly the park we are in has every "pet" site full, but lots of empties in the "non-pet" areas. Hmmmmm. One would think that the management would get smart.

As to lying - well that is up to each person.

I travel with a cat, or is it the other way around? The litter box is riding in the shower stall because it is out of the way and still excessable for the Kitty !
When it needs changing I just pick up the litter in its plastic liner and put it in the trash, simple no problem.
Miss Kitty is a good traveler and a fun companion.

The pet rules need clearification with some RV parks as even they don't know what they are talking about sometimes. When I call for reservations I ask what are the pet rules. Sometimes I just go somewhere else if it doesn't suit me.

Had a cat and now a dog. I never tell the campground that I have a pet. The dog never barks and I pick up the turds's. I don't want to pay any extra for a pet and I don' t use the campground showers or bathrooms. I'd call that a wash.
