We'll be taking our two canine-American citizens with us to California this summer (and their friend, the cat, too). Will I need any special documentation or anything? We normally travel with their rabies vaccination records, etc, no one's ever asked, but.....

I think the records that you normally carry will suffice. We have never been asked for anything no matter where we travel. The only thing the campgrounds want to know is the breed, sometimes. At the California border the do have an agricultural check point and will ask about any produce or plants you are transporting into the state. Thats should be it, have a great trip.

They may confiscate your dog food. Especially if its purchased from out of state. Apparently there are animal products in the dog food that can pose a risk for mad cow disease. At least that's what they told me when they asked.

Just take their passports and show the Border patrol at the California aka Mexifornia border check points.

We have never had any problem go or coming at the border.

I do sometimes think CA is a foreign country, but alas, I have never had a problem with our 70 pound Husky looking out the dash window. I have never been asked for papers.

Interesting, our last crossing from Arizona to California at Yuma they ask if we had a Ferret----evidently if we had one we could not have crossed, or at least the Ferret could not.

You never know some traveling Ferret owner may be reading.

Yeah, I do believe ferrets have been banned in California for quite some time.

A few years ago I was driving a U.S. Govt. Vehicle back from Arizona....I went thru the US Border Patrol Check point on I-8 @ Buckman Springs the agent asked me where I was born (now I am driving a BIG Truck with US Navy on the side of it for official use only) and this guy asks me where I was born. (being as a bunch of illegals tried to get past wearing USMC utilities here at this same check point I can see why he asked) But I don't think he liked my answer I said "Iowa" does that not make me a citizen?

It all went down hill from there.

I think you all are too hard on California. Seems like everyone wants to live here (good weather) and we have no smoking in public places. I can live with no ferrets, no firearms, and highest fuel prices but I can't live with complainers. If you all had a border with Mexico you too would have illegals. Just look at Arizona and they can legally carry a firearm. So, just give up on bashing the land of fruit and nuts and go somewhere else with your ferret.

We've no problems getting in or out - but our small Rottweiler is outlawed at most parks. The chihuahua and jackchi, no problems. Also there are many quantity restrictions at parks.

We travel from Oregon to Gardnerville, Nevada many times during the year and cross "the border" just before Alturas CA....the check point has gotten very interesting over the years, here was our last experience, we travel in motorhome.
The border lady (very nice) asked us what we had on board, told her two cats and a little dog, then they "come on board", fine with us. They inspected our refrig, they were asking for any pitted fruits, citrus, houseplants and GERBILS!!!!
She told us that GERBILS are illegal in CA and appears if you travel with one they will "take it" at the border....
anyway she told us if we happen to have fruit etc and have bought in like at Costco, keep your fruit in the bag of purchase...
Over the past 30 some years traveling into CA gets more and more interesting....
you can go on their website and you will get a list of what is allowed, etc and what the regs are, its under Agriculture, which apparently a Gerbil is considered!!!
To date we have never been asked for any kind of pet medical records and we have travel with cats and a dog for years....
Now the border crossing just north of Reno Nevada they ask where we are coming from, we tell them and they say have a good day....
always interesting its never the same at the various border checks.
