We realize now how fortunate we were when our beloved calico quickly faded last week that we could move to our former hometown quickly and take her to vet who had treated her for over 8 years. While I know that any vet would have been able to help us, we did feel that having someone whom you have built up a relationship with over the years made the whole process easier. For anyone who has had to go through this somewhere that is new to you, how did you decide which vet to use, when to go to see them, etc.

Tough decisions ...actually we use two vets at our "primary" location ...we use a military vet for annual shots, heart worm meds, etc because their prices are way better, and we use another vet for things the military vet does not do (surgery, etc). While traveling, we have used a local vet that a family member recommended on one occasion, and the local PetsMart on another.

There are not that many Vet Schools in the US. Most Vets have Classmates or Classmates that know other Vets in most parts of the Country. If you have an emergency, call your Vet and ask for a referral. Have your Vet call that Vet and bring them up to speed on the Pets medical history. When you get to the new Vet ask them to consult with your Personal Vet on course of treatment.

Most Vets are happy to accommodate another and appreciate the referral and consultation. We have done this several times on our trips and when we full timed. Hope this helps.
