A poodle may not be intimidating to some but I have a toy one that will jump up and nip you on the hand or from behind.. sneaky .. especially if she feels that you are giving one of the others more attention than her. But they can and will be more protective than expected from them. Bluff you with the bark love the browns, my Baylee that I am talking about is a beautiful dark brown.
take care
Helen

Love the browns so much that I matched my decor to the dogs. This is Gable, 50 pounds at 9 months old. Harmless but he does have a big bark.

Just an observation about poodles, don't sell them short, they are excellent watch dogs plus they can be quite ferocious when in the protect mode. Even a Miniature is nothing to fool around with let alone a standard size.
I've seen both sizes take on a protect attitude.
Cheers
Willey

Poodles are hounds. They can be very protective. As a kid, I had a miniature poodle for a pet. She was very protective. My next dog (wedding gift from Hubby) was a rescured American Eskimo Spitz. She was the same size as the poodle and just as protective (possibly more so). My other two dogs (also rescues) were larger... much larger. But the smaller 30 lb dogs were just as protective as my larger 60+ lb dogs. Currently I have no fur kids... and I don't see any in the near future unless we quit being food vendors... can't have the hair.

I know it's off topic but Poodles do not shed at all so safe around food. I had a standard Poodle that may have saved my life. 18 years old walking a big fluffy dog and a car full of teenaged boys attempted to pull me into the vehicle. One left with a bite mark on his forearm and I was able to run to safety. My current boy is still a baby but I think he would try to protect me if needed.

We have a 4 year old black standard. Smartest dog I have ever seen. He lets you know when there is a problem and glues himself to my hip until I solve it. I love the no shedding, particularly in the RV. He is also learning to be a pheasant hunting dog. They were originally water dogs from Germany.

We had a standard that succumbed to Addison's at five. She was a great dog. There were frequent visits to the vet and she rode in the back of the Jeep like she was surfing. She was a great alarm, standing straight up and barking if someone approached. We have a 15 year old border collie now, but I could see another standard poodle when the time comes.

We have a toy poodle. We had no idea how smart they were and what a great companion they can be. Our life would not be the same without him.

My Toy Poodle Cricket is currently on stage in a community theatre production. Everyone is amazed at how well behaved she is. Actually sleeps under the piano between her scenes. My Standard is training to play Sandy in a local production of "Annie". Such versitile dogs, they adapt to whatever I'm involved in, Next up, a ten day Christmas trip to visit the family.

Here's our 10 month old standard. She's a 'phantom' and is already 60#.

We have a 1 1/2 year old apricot standard poodle who's great company for us and for our 4 year old black labrador retriever. Both ladies are definitely parts of our family.
The younger poodle is the alpha dog. She's bright and a little high strung. The lab is a laid back girl.

Standard Poodles were originally hunting dogs for wild boar. To do that a dog needs heart and courage. This Poodles have in abunance.
