I have two Pembroke Welsh Corgis. My male (Mr. RD) is the best traveler! He is always in the RV ready to go if we leave the door open. Matter of fact we have had words about who will occupy the passenger side seat!
The female (Brie) does not like to be in anything the moves. When we take them with us, we have to chase her down and carry her into the RV. Our first problem with her was once we got her into the motor home, she ran right under my husband’s feet, while he was trying to drive. So now we bring a baby gate and block her off. She is so unhappy; she will jump up onto the couch and starts panting. I’m not sure if she is motion sick or scared out of her mind.
I know it is not that she doesn’t want to go; it’s riding in the RV/car that is the problem. My husband had the RV and Jeep hooked up and brought it around to the front of the house and here came Brie trotting behind the unit like she was going to fallow us all the way to the camp site. I told her she had to get into the RV and she gave me a mournful look and rolled over, like “OK mom, I’ll submit but you will have to pick up dead weight!”
Is there anyone out there dealing with a situation like this? How are you working with it? Will I have to resort to meds?

Have her ride in a crate and see if being confined helps her settle down a bit. I have a whippet so fearful of traveling that he will get car sick in the car before it leaves the driveway. We started crating him in the RV and then letting him out after he calmed down. Now he seems to enjoy the RV trips.

We still can't get him to ride in the car. For car trips we have to give him a phenobarbital first. With the pheno, he gets in the car and snoozes.

Just a thought, have you considered playing with the dog outside the RV at home a few days until she is comfortable there. Open the door any play just outside it, again until she becomes comfortable. You see where I"m going with this, continue until she is comfortable playing inside the RV, still at home, parked, no motor running, etc. This technique works for me when training horses, dogs, cows, etc. When I owned/trained horses, all I had to do was open the trailer door and they loaded themselves, then turned their head as if to say I'm in, hook me in. It did take me about a month of training to get one horse to even enter the trailer, she had been mistreated badly when I got her.
If an animal is made to do what is wanted, they resent it, and will never perform to potential. If they are guided into doing what is wanted, and discover it is pleasurable to them, plus, they are pleasing their human; they usually perform their best.
As to motion sickness, pills are about it.

FWIW, I used to have a corgi/dachshund mix. She responded to that training method great. I used to balance a dog treat on her nose, go outside, walk around the house, and when I reentered, the treat was still there. I would say OK and she tossed/ate it immediately. Then came for her deserved loving.

One of my girls, Emma (the one you see "waving" in my photo) HATED traveling. Everyone else does back flips seeing who can get in first but not Emma- she ran the opposite direction.

I started by making sure that she had an empty stomach, then- after everyone was loaded- I calmly went and got her and gave her her favorite treat. Then I would put her in a wire crate- with one of the other dogs- right next to me. This way I could put my fingers in the crate and pet her, talk to her and she felt safer.

After a few trips, I would put her in a crate by herself. Doing the same thing- talking and petting.

She now runs up, with the other dogs, to get in. While I don't think that she will ever be as enthusiastic, as the other dogs, she is happy and ready to travel.

We've had a similar problem with our rescued lab/springer/husly? mix Lucy. Our previous dog loved to travel in anything that moved but Lucy was reluctant from the get-go. She was car and rv anxious and would start drooling and vomit within 2 minutes, even if we were not moving.

Over time, with patience and some medications (Ace then some herbal stuff called Rescue Remedy), she has adapted to the motorhome. However, she wanted no part of riding in the car. Putting her in her crate did not seem to help.

Our dog (people) trainer suggested conditioning exercises so this is what I did:

.put her in the car and just sit (don't start the engine, just sit). We did that for about 10 minutes 3 days.
.3 more short sessions in the car but now start the motor.
.3 short sessions of driving a very short distance...basically around the block.
At this point, she went from having to be put in the car to voluntarily jumping in herself. So, we started taking a 1 or 2 mile trip ending at her exercise pen which is behind our house. We would play. Did that for about a week to try and get her to associate the car with fun.

She now will travel in the car with less anxiety but will need more work. I don't think she will ever be a real happy traveler. In the motorhome she will sometimes do fine. Then, some days, she will travel all day and seem fine, then throw up 5 minutes before we stop for the day.

Brie will get into the RV as long as the engine is not running. She Fallows me from the house to the motorhome when I am packing up or cleaning. She will jump right into it. Brie just does not like that RV when it moves.

I had not had her in the car for a while, so decided to take the pups with us to get ice cream…..yes they get some. Brie did better on this last trip then before. She actually jumped up to the window and stuck her head out. Something she has never done before. Maybe it is just taking time getting used to it.

I haven’t tried another RV trip with her yet. I bought some soft sided dog creates for the RV. They store folded up into a small square and pop open to set up. I think I will try that on her next trip.
I appreciate everyone’s input.

We have a corgi as well. Guinevere likes the "Idea" of going for a ride until she gets in the car or anything that moves. We opt just to leave her at home. Besides, her legs are so short she can not climb the stairs to the MH. LOL
