Respecting campers without pets
Recently, there has been what seems like an explosion of rv'ers with pets, particularly dogs. From little " pocket dogs" to dogs of the larger variety, dogs at an rv park are becoming as common as children at a ice cream truck. Having had dogs as a child I can truly understand the comfort of companionship, affection and safety of having a dog with you, especially when traveling. However, with the increasing presence of dogs there is an unfortunate byproduct that has emerged; that is the seeming entitlement to allow the dog to use the restroom wherever it decides to stop. Increasingly, I see dog owners walking their dogs throughout the day, many without the " mutt mitt" to clean up after the dog has done its "doo." I have seem many owners allow their dog(s) to even use the lawn of other rv'ers and just walk off like nothing happened. What makes this practice even more startling is that most, if not all rv parks that allow pets, usually have separate areas designed especially for this purpose. But, I guess these areas are too inconvenient to be used for their intended purpose. It really hit home this past week end when I took my two year old grand son to a sports field adjacent to a children's play area in the rv park and nearly stepped in a pile of poo while teaching him to fly a kite for the first time. Two dog areas were less than 50 yards away... On a more positive note, I see many dogs owners who are very respectful of other rv'ers by properly leashing their dogs and only allowing them to do their business in properly designated areas. I applaud these owners and look forward to the day when I can pull into a site and not have to worry about stepping into something when setting up my rv for a well deserved, relaxing stay. Now, about those cigarette butts.......

I have a dog and it irritates me when I see owners not police up after their animals and walk their dogs in camp areas not theirs. When I happen to witness a abusive pet owner, I use my cell phone and take a photo of them and the dog in the act. Then I stop off by the parks Ranger/Manager and make a complaint with photo that I send to their phone or PC. Can't argue with photo evidence.

The "Me" society
Unfortunately we are living in a time when many people have no respect for others and could care less about whether you step in their dogs crap. When I see it happen I call them on it. I could give a rip if they don't like it. In fact I have gone as far as picking it up and throwing it back on their camp site and waiting for a reply back. It usually doesn't happen. They get the point.

I don't think it's a recent "explosion" of RVrs with dogs. I've always joked that they come as standard equipment with the purchase of an RV. I'd guess 75% of RVrs travel with at least one furry pet, usually a dog.
What I think has changed is attitude. The, "it's all about me" mentality is epidemic.
Most of the people we meet walking their dogs here are very conscientious of picking up after their pets, but we do find an occasional "abandoned" BM. Typically we'll pick it up, assuming we have a bag with us.
This park does have a designated dog walk area, it's about a half mile (I am not exaggerating) walk from our site, farther for a few others. It is simply not realistic to expect the dogs to "wait" for 15 minutes as we walk to the designated area. The good news is, few of the owners here mind, as long as you pick up after your pet.
It is up to us to "remind" those that need it that ignoring what should be common courtesy can result in further restrictions or a full ban, as it has in some parks already.

Yes, it's quite impossible to force a dog to wait to go pottie or poopie when traveling clear across the park to a 'designated area'.
Policing your own animal's refuse is and has always been an issue, whether at home, on the road, in a park, wherever. The few give the whole a bad rep.
I've never met a dog owner that doesn't police up their own animal's refuse, but I know they are out there, otherwise there wouldn't be 'evidence' all over places.
That's bad no matter where you are, but I've seen it in county, city parks, you name it, someone didn't police up the poop patrol....of course, it's an imperfect world, but sure would be nice if it weren't an issue for anyone.

This is true, and not just in campgrounds. We have a neighbor who walks his two dogs around the neighborhood daily to let them "deposit" on other people's lawns. He doesn't linger in front of our house any more because a few months ago I walked out and advised him to get moving. So annoying, and I'm a dog lover. (It's not the dog's fault that the owner is a jerk.)

Personal way? What does that mean?

Another issue here completely missed is that 'respecting campers without pets' is that 'campers WITH pets' don't appreciate dirt bag pet caretakers that don't police up their pet's waste any more than campers without pets.
Just because I have pets doesn't mean I don't care for stepping in dog pooh either.
Anyone that is not policing their dog's waste is deficient and a lazy caretaker.
Anyone stepping in pooh regardless of ownership, doesn't appreciate it at all.

my mom had pets all her life and they were on a pretty consistent schedule. you can't always predict, but you can somewhat keep a pretty consistent format.

I agree Lincolnboy2. Unfortunately, I think we're all preaching to the choir. I always carry extra poo bags when I walk our dogs and I make all attempts to prevent them from going in other sites. Sometimes my attempts fail and I personally find it embarrassing when our dog squats right in front of people camping. But I will clean up. If this makes me a bad pet owner then...

Not to get off the subject, but I think the problem of pets pooping on lawns is mainly due to the fact that the owners have these extendable leashes that allow the dog to roam almost at will. We only use a 6' standard leash that keeps our dog in complete control and she is not allowed to go on lawns or flower beds. In our park, the dog run is about 100 yds away and she has learned that she is only allowed to pee/poop there and will hold "it" until we get there. In other unfamiliar parks, the short leash will keep her in control (and moving) until we do get to a designated spot. She is not allowed to stop to pee/poop along the way. Once she has done her business, then on the return trip back to the mh, she is allowed to stop and sniff to her heart's desire.
So yes, you can control when and where your dog will pee/poop. It's all in the training. Be responsible!
