One thing we have done with all our dogs is train them to never EVER exit the car without a command ( OK). This saves on the stress of them shooting out into traffic. You can train them by name and command but it is more difficult with multiple dogs. Also since we travel with them a lot ( even in the airplane) we train them to go on command. (Ie: "Amos hurry up"). That way we are not standing around in prop-wash or crappy weather waiting on the dogs.

Add in boat ramps if you are off the interstates. We look before driving down any long driveway but most ramps have big parking intended for folks who need a turn around loop and long space to park the truck and trailer. Usually visible from the road, if not walk in first. We did find one the was just a long backup to the river. ;-) As usual don't try it if there is a big crowd trying to launch. OTOH they often make nice mid week lunch stops.

From what we see, Cracker Barrel parking lots are too small for us.
Rest areas, lowes, Home Depot, walley world, we have even stopped at the dot weigh stations if there are not a lot of trucks.

X2 on all of the above.

IF you stop at gas pumps, particularly truck stop pumps, the ground outside is DEEEEsgutingly filthy. So check where, and in what, you're letting your pups put their paws in prior to letting the embark on their poo missions

At truck stops, we carried our dogs down, but they are small. Last thing I want is diesel all over their paws.

I dont know about that! I probably stopped at a couple of dozen rest areas heading south and back, this past winter. Some of them, the truckers fly into.
You definatly want your dog on the leash, before you get out of your rig!

Lots of truckers travel with a pet dog in the truck with them. Any rest area has a pet area, and also all truck stops I have seen have someplace you can let the dogs walk and do their break.

When we are traveling on a regular highway, sometimes the newer shopping centers are well landscaped both in front and in back. We will pull around to the side or back and there are usually nice grassy areas to walk the dogs, plus those areas are designed for trucks so usually are easy to negotiate.
