Sam's first trip

We are taking our lab mix Sam on his first trip tomorrow. Have packed food, bowls, leash, poop bags, tie out and enclosure for when we are gone. Any other things we may need?

I may have misread...but, I would not leave Sam out, tied or in an 'enclosure' when you are not there. He may bark, trying to call you back, he may jump or dig out and go looking for you.

We leave our dog in the motorhome with the a/c on in warm weather. Give him something to do - a bone to chew or something.

Hi HoleInOne!

Most campgrounds or parks don't allow pups to be tied out or left outdoors without you there. No unattended pets is the rule I've found more often than not.

Enjoy and post pictures!

If you have any shot records or health issues recorded from a Vet, take those papers along in case you have to go to a Vet for any reason. Like above I would not have him stay outside, but train him to stay in and get used to being alone in the RV.

Some campgrounds don't even allow you to leave them in the RV alone while you are gone. And most never outside.

Hope he isn't a barker when you leave him in the MH.
Best to sneak back and check, with out him knowing you are around.
If you don't want to be asked to leave the campground.

Ditto the above on leaving the dog alone outside. I've seen specific rules at most campgrounds prohibiting that due to potential for dog barking endlessly while you are gone and disturbing other campers. But in addition to the things you have listed to bring alone, I also always bring along some basic first aid items that might be needed incase they step on something and get a foot injury, or you need to extract a little shard of something from their paw pad. I also always have their brush and extra dog towels with me so I can brush them before entering the camper to get off excess dirt, or towels to clean off feet, etc.

As said...NOPE...don't expect to be able to use it unless you are with him.

Also...along with any vet records, make sure you have all his vaccination tags on the collar when he is outside.

Finally...do you have him chipped? If so, make sure you have the information on reporting to the company and/or your vet if you have an unfortunate situation happen.

I don't want to paint a horrible picture but...

Lost dogs are often the target of unscrupulous people. Anywhere for demanding finder's fees to selling them to dog fighting operations to be "bait" are some of the sad stories to be heard. Then there is the chance that they are found by a shelter with a kill policy.

The bottom line is we NEVER leave our dogs unattended outside of our home. We do lock our home when we leave. Granted, 2 GSDs should be enough deterrent by themselves but...

My Lily has a tag on her collar with my cell phone # on it. Thankfully we've never needed it, yet ... And hopefully never. I also tag my key ring the same way.

We have that also but collars can get removed intentionally or accidentally. Chips can't. I certainly hope a finder used the collar and called us. Also, the chip is proof positive of ownership.

Lily is also chipped, but I like the idea that the RVer whose rig she would likely run into would call me and I could get her back in minutes instead of hours. If there was a GPS unit she could carry, she'd probably have one as well. She's only 8 pounds and thinks everyone is her best friend.

We was at an RV park in Az, a little pup came running up to me while I was sitting outside. It was Apparent that she had lost her way. Very good of her parents to have their cell phone number on her tag. She had been with me for a few minutes when I called, but had been missing from them for over an hour. They were happy to be Reunited with their pup. Remember to include the area code with phone number. These people didn't have it on there but did have the city and I was able to look it up.

My comment about putting a GPS on Lily prompted me to look to see what is now available.

There is a pet GPS device but it is only recommended for pets 20 pounds or more. Walmart and others sell them cheaper. It probably could be attached to her vest harness, but she likes to roll in the dirt with the vest on -- I think it itches. I would want to leave the vest on 24/7 which would defeat the purpose of having a location device on her. There's a $12.95 monthly charge for the locator service that makes this work.

I also found this that could be attached to the top of a harness and provide some help. Only $30 and no service fee.
