Snakes and fur babies
I plan on doing a lot of boondocking, and even when I'm not, my fur babies like going on hikes. How do you protect your fur babies from snakes and snake bites, and is there something you carry if they get bit?

Where are you camping?
If you plan on camping in Florida you need to watch out for alligators. Most of the parks in Florida have signs warning about alligators if it's near water.

Get in touch with a trainer and have them train your dogs ........they can learn/be taught to NOT mess with snakes
Plus the dogs should never be out of your direct control when hiking

I don't plan on going to Florida (too scary), and my fur babies are trained and will stay with me (I always have them on a leash). I'm more worried about areas where we would be walking on a trail and an aggressive snake goes after us, or we don't see a snake and get too close.

There are rattlesnake avoidance classes for dogs. Lily went to one last February in Quartzsite, AZ. They teach that the snake scent means pain. Hiking with a trained dog will help you avoid them, too.

There are vets in AZ who are giving rattlesnake vaccines, but there hasn’t been sufficient testing yet for me to feel comfortable giving it to Lily.

I have a friend, he’s on this board so he may chime in with details, who had his dog trained for snake avoidance. He claims it worked very well.
My vet recommends the vaccine and I’ve used it on my dogs for years. They’ve never been bit, but my sisters Cocker Spaniel was Rattlesnake bitten 5 times in 13 years and she survived them all.

Sounds like that Cocker is a slow learner, poor girl.

We live on a lake in Central florida where gators are present so we keep our dogs away from the water even though they love to swim.
Snakes are very common here and I found one in a shed a couple of days ago.
I trained my dogs to avoid snakes and I was really impressed when our Cocker just sat there while I took care of the critter. He stayed back and just looked at me.
Being a native of Northern Calif I found many rattlesnakes over the years. In one particular place where there is no trespassing except for someone servicing radios at the top of a mountain it was not unusual to encounter more than one Rattler in the same day. I encountered literally hundreds of them in 40 years and found rattlers are normally docile except when there is no path of escape.
Only once in 50 years did I ever encounter a really ticked off rattler. I suspect it had just shed its skin and was just cranky.
The only snake that has ever "chased me" was a black racer on our property here in Florida. I chased that snake around the house and then it turned and chased me. My grandson still goes into stitches when he said "grandpa squealed like a little girl". Well it was my first encounter with a 6 foot gloss black snake in Florida and I didn not know what it was for sure.
If you are unsure of your surroundings keep your dogs on a leash and take your time on the trails. Normally a rattler will let you pass but remember than not all rattlers have rattles. Or at least not enough to make a real good noise.
Rattle is not the sound I would call it anyway. It is usually a buzz. I have seen them just hiss at me.
There are snakes in Florida that can be fatal for a dog because many vets would not have the antivenom at hand. I don't recall which ones my vet said but rattlesnake venom is usually on hand.

I've heard that if you open your RV door and hear what sounds like air leaking out of a tire, STOP!!! It's probably a rattlesnake under your steps.

Black Racers can be pretty aggressive, but I've never seen a six footer. A long time ago, I had a six foot long, gloss black, Indigo snake in my garage. I caught it and let it go in the woods. Good snake to have around, they can eat rattlers.

If you are talking about the cat in your picture, good luck. My cat loves to walk on a leash but he so nosey it takes us 1/2 hour to walk two blocks. His face is into everything. I don't know how he would react to a snake but all other creatures are at least worthy of a creeping and stalking session.

Kind of like what happened to Hazzy three doors down from us in Dateland. That was an impressive snake and Jim and Pepper took care of that issue quite quickly.

IMO research the area you are in for local species.... then also how close to a VET and hours etc... or call that local vet for a recommendation..
Depends of you fur baby. some are not gonna do well or understand the danger,, Others have instincts to fight them, avoid them...
Just be careful..
