I have only been bitten by two dogs in my life, an poodle and a Chihuahua mix, have had what is termed as dangerous dogs all my life, boxers, staffordshire bull terrier, currently bull terrier and gsd. They will bite, but only if you wake them up, force their mouths open insert hand and force mouths shut.

This debate is very simple for me. A few dog owners with poor pet skills and LACK of common sense are ruining it for all of the other considerate pet owners. It only takes one dog bite in a campground to scare the heck out of the owners in fear of a lawsuit. You see the inconsiderate pet owners walking their dogs without a leash, or chaining them to a tree while they go shopping. This is NOT a pet issue, rather a person issue. Sorry to sound so harsh, we love our pets and do not want to be punished for the actions, or lack of actions, of others.

Don, I know and love your dogs!
How about another possible wrinkle?
Perhaps CG owners or managers have pre-concieved opinions of certain dogs due to societal stereotyping? They may be simply trying to not traumatize any patrons, thus protecting their image and cash flow?
Just a thought, pal.
Dave
PS wish we could make it to RVG!

Well said ! For example, my Bull Terrier, would he bite you ? I suppose anything is possible, but not likely, would he knock you over on a trail if running free ? Yes ! That is why as the responsible owner he would never be allowed to run free.

Certain breeds can be scary to people due in part to the reputation they have been given by poor owners, I can completely understand that campground operators have a business to run, if I was turned away because of the breed of my dog, I would be disappointed, but I would understand

Again...I'm not trying to debate breed issues. I'm just trying to blow some steam off on why a place would allow guns sight unseen but not dogs given my perception of relative danger to others.

As a side note, the 20 foot retractable leash , while technically it is a leash, a dog is not under control if it is at the end of one unless it is retracted.

Sky boss I totally agree with your point. Both items can be deadly if handled irresponsibly

I'm going to get myself in a lot of trouble on this one, I'm sure! I've held the personal, tongue-in-cheek, theory that 95% of everything in life is crap, including people. That sounds pessimistic, but it still leaves five folks out of a hundred that I look forward to meeting!
If you are a dog owner, and you could not call your dog out of the middle of a dog fight with a simple verbal command, then you are part of the problem. A very good friend of mine, now deceased, could do that with his German Shepherd. So if my theory is correct, the good reputation of dog owners rest in the hands in much fewer hands that you might otherwise suspect.....
Feel free to beat on me. My position is unrealistic, and probably wrong...but it's how I see things.
Nick B
PS I'm a dog lover, but not a dog owner, because I couldn't do what my friend could with his. That for me was the price of entry.

In a perfect world I would agree with you, your friend had a real knack with dogs, the rest of us will have to use a leash

This always entertains to me when I pull up to camp grounds. They always allow pets but are more afraid of my 63lb german shepherd mix service animal that my 180lb english mastiff. I have more on and off leash control of her than most dogs that I know, and can recall her from most anything. I think that a few people give the majority dog owner a bad name.

ALL guns are scary to me due in part to their well earned reputation for killing .....around 30 people p/day I believe is the current 2013 statistic....while fatal dog bites accounted for 30 people in the entire 2013 year. Does seem like dogs are getting a bad rap, as I am 10,000 times more likely to get killed by the gun guy in the next site than killed by his dog!
