Water bowl spills

I have a 30 lb Cockapoo that travels very well with me. His water bowl does not keep the water from sloshing on the floor while we are driving down the road.
Any suggestions????

easiest most cost effective solution........

empty the bowl or only put in a very very small amount

we travel with our pup and he knows the drink before the wheels move as there will be if any a very small amount of water in his bowl.

when we stop for leg breaks he gets water if he wants it...and yes he tells us when he is hungry or needs water. he stands at the hallway door and stares at the bowl
followed by a low whoof

We fill ours a 1/4 to a 1/3 full while traveling and haven't seen any spills.

Hi and welcome to the forum!

We tried a bowl designed to minimize spills but the dogs didn't seem to like it so we just went back to filling it only 1/4 full when traveling. We place their bowl on a place mat to help absorb anything which does spill.

Good luck.

We use 2 different methods, depending on roads/routes.

The first is the most common, it's a rubber collapsible bowl that has sides that slant quite a bit back into the bowl such that the bottom of the bowl is probably double the size around the opening is. Any sloshing causes the water to make a U-turn and splash back into the bowl, not out.

The second, which is actually what we use in the plane is a drinking bottle. When the dog licks the nipple it trickles water out onto their tongue. Most dogs take to it very easily. It is about the same diameter as a $2 plastic holder meant to store plastic grocery bags for reuse, we just slip it into that and the dog drinks as needed.

We use a bowl designed to be non-spill. Our dogs are not picky, heck, if they could get to the toilet.... If they were picky, and found the non-spill bowl was the only water supply, I'm sure they would get over their pickiness.

We have about a 9" diameter metal bowl. When moving, we put a smaller cool whip bowl inside the metal bowl -- no spills. If you want to go fancy, you could try something like this: No Spill Pet Bowl for Dogs - Plastic & Melamine - Bowls & Feeding Accessories - PetSmart

we have been using the no spill bowl from petsmart detailed in bflinn181's post with good results for our 2 cats for 5 years.

Not for our feathered friends but for the 4-footed variety they make a no-splash water bowl.

Basically it is a bowl with a cover, and.. Well..

There's a hole, there's a hole, There's a whole in the middle of the cover.

If you have a small bowl with a cover (Or better yet two covers) Perhaps a small tupperware type dish, Drill, punch or cut a hole in the middle of the cover about 1/2 the radius of the cover itself, Big enough for the bird to quenh his thirst with the dish 1/3 to 1/2 full, and fill it no more than 1/2 full. Might work

As water splashes up the edge it hits the cover and falls back in.

Note you may need to "Thicken" that cover some how to avoid a sharp edge which could injure your feathered friend.. I will leave that up to you to design. but plastic foam would be my first suggestion.

I trained all my puppies to drink from a cup. A nice large drink cup. It would hold some ice and water, be only half full, sit in a drink cup holder installed low, and not slosh.

Neat, tidy and if you get plastic ones they travel well and can nest to save space. OR, just buy a big gulp at a truck stop.
