Just curious, I know many of you travel with dogs and many have multiples of one breed. What is your favorite breed of dog and why? I've owned many but always come back to the Poodle. They're very smart, easy to train and almost human at times. The no shedding is a bonus too. Golden Retreivers are also great but too many health issues.

Shelties, two of them, good travelers and great with children when walking around campgrounds. Everyone likes little Lassies.

After spending a lifetime with Great Danes and Poodles of all sizes we now have two Westies and a Sheltie. Just love the Westies but everyone else really does seem to gravitate toward the "little Lassie".

Hienz 57 Breed..

Best I had was a German Shepherd/?. Highly intelligent, loved kids and very protective against strangers.

Another plus he didn't seem to have all the health problems that the purebreds have.

Ditto. Have had Irish setter, Lhasa apso, golden retriever, dalmation, border collie, all time favorite black lab mix. Have a boxer mix and a Jack Russell. The last three mention have all been rescue dogs. Only rescues from now on. Spent untold amounts of money on the pure breeds. The golden especially hit us hard because she was so loving and gentle. Extremely fast growing throat tumor cut off her airway before we could even get her into the bettor surgery. So yes no more pure breeds unless their people are too elderly or have passed.

Rottweiler, both have been superb children companions
and both were lost to cancer,
our "drop off" "pound puppy" dog has been superb as well he loves kids and simply does not bark unless its an emergency

i think the dog chooses you and then your are part of the pack.

St. Bernards, 2 to 3 at a time, all rescues for the last 30 years or so.

Aside from the hair and the drool, they're lovely traveling companions.

Having had Danes for years I remember those days when I ALWAYS had a towel within arms reach for the drool. Love those giant guys though.

Labradors - we currently have two and they were both rescues.

The older female choc was a private rescue from a family break-up. She was about 8 months old when she joined us and will be 14 years old this October. She has suffered from Addison's disease since she was a year old. She's getting frail now, so we may not use the RV as much this season. The height off the ground is a real problem for her (basement-style Class A).

Our yellow male will be eight years old this July but he acts like an 18-month-old!. We've had him just over 3 years. He'd been sent to the pound by by two different families, so he has some anxiety issues. If we could just get a reliable "walk-to-heel" and "sit - stay" things would be great.

As with all Labs, hair is a nuisance, but we wouldn't do it any other way. These are #4 and #5. We had to leave #1 in the UK with my brother when we emigrated. #2 was a very difficult-to-train mix who went to the pound after a couple of years. # 3 died of esophogeal cancer at 12 years old (3 1/2 years ago). In between #2 and #3, we had a "thoroughbred mongrel" from the pound - quite a bit of Golden Retriever, but smaller. She lived to 18.

I use to be a happy camper with a tent, but when I got my dogs, "they" needed a trailer....then a bigger trailer.....then a Super-C......and now they are very happy in their Class A.

My corgis are great dogs and travel companions. They are very smart, obedient, and they love to play ball and sit around and stare at me all day, unless they are sleeping/sitting on my feet or asleep themselves.

19 years ago we were adopted by a "show up" little black Pomeranian.
We live in the woods and he chose our house to show up at.....my husband said they have maps to our house.
After 18 wonderful happy travel years he went to heaven.

We waited six months and found a Puppy mill rescue blue merle Pomeranian (in photo) at animal shelter across the state for adoption.
We drove five hours to meet her and the rest is history.

We proudly say "we were truly the ones rescued".
She is small, quiet and great traveler....and very smart!
After all she chose us!

In case you didn't know, you can shave your labs (and Goldens etc.) for the summer. I'm a groomer and every owner who has tried it comes back every year. Pretty much eliminates the shedding.
