As noted, each state is different and this makes it difficult to decide what to do. One thing to remember is that an unloaded gun is called a CLUB.

There is not any CCW or CHL permit that is recognized by all 50 states for the general public. A retired LEO is allowed to have a pistol in all 50 states as noted by dajudge. A couple of groups are pushing for a national CHL or CCW permit.

I took my CCW class at the local pistol range. The instructor is a retired state police officer. Great class, learned a lot about Virginia carry laws. I'm not sure if I agree with his philosophy when he told the class the first sound from his pump shotgun will be "the sound of it sending a load of 00 buckshot down range". We were told that if you shoot someone, justified or not, be prepared to be taken away in handcuffs. The only thing that would change that is if you already had a bullet hole in yourself. Then you would go the the Emergency room and then be taken away in handcuffs. He said the only way for a gun of any kind to be any good for personal protection, is fully loaded, round in the chamber, with the safety on. I just cannot do that, but he does have a point. If a bad guy has a gun and hears you rack the slide, on your Mossberg 500, to chamber a round, the next thing you hear may be a bullet coming in your direction. If you carry for protection be prepared for the consequences, because more likely than not you will get some very unpleasant ones. If not there is always the wasp spray.

Just some observations from 'Wayne's World' here on Rinkers Ranch.

Also. If your threat has ahold of your arm, can you chamber your gun with one hand ?

And this from one of our founding fathers....

"Laws that forbid the carrying of arms. . . disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes. . . Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man." - Thomas Jefferson

I would love to see you walk around in Texas with it. The law would be on you like flies on stink. Most other states too.

I have heard of some legislation that is trying to get open carry in Texas but for now it is concealed only by permit only.
Not quite true, WA allows open carry without a permit, but I have both WA and OR CCW's, with WA's reciprocity I'm good in about 30 states, just slightly less than FL's

Mr_D,
I think you may be a bit off on that. I think you, and I, are only good in about 23 states with the reciprocity granted to WA permit holders. It ought to be all 50, just like a drivers license.

MO CCW covers the most stAtes. MO also has open carry. Most local laws however don't allow open carry, so it's rare.

The only one that should know you have a gun is the one you are pointing it at.

Texas provides for a non-resident Concealed license as long as you take the course in Texas. However, some states that honor Texas CC do not recognize Texas non-resident license. All Texas concealed handgun classes must be taught in Texas.

On another note: Why would anyone want to open carry if they could carry concealed?

Well people have differant reasons.
Many feel that it should be there right to open carry if that's what they choose to do.
conceal carry requires more planning & expense & compromise than open carry.

TRUE! Though after living in NC for 47 years I have never seen anyone do it.

We WILL shut down a major university for someone carrying an umbrella on a sunny day though!

Umbrella, not gun, causes lockdown at ECU :: WRAL.com
