I travel with our two dogs during the late summer and early fall. Why, you ask? Well, it seems that I was a mandatory retirement and my wife is not eligible to retire for three more years!

So, the dogs and I head back to Michigan from CA and visit family. We stay at state parks, enjoy the lakes, and talk with new friends. My wife schedules a nice lengthy vacation, flies into Detroit where we get back together and spend a few weeks working our way back home to CA.

Someday we will travel east and west together, but for now it is the Golden Retriever, the German Short Haired Pointer and I. Did I mention I get to see some nice college football games without the crazy questions?

Every marriage has it's own rhythm. Listen for yours.

Wow, the responses have been great with excellent ideas. I retire a number of years before Sue does. I have thinking about getting an older camper, maybe C class, so we can go fishing on weekends at first and then I can use it after retirement for visiting family and such. She's slowly coming around to ways we can do this without losing the home, suc as renting for the school year to a grad student and family, and then having our home back for the summer. So all your ideas are very important to me. Go RV!!

This year I got my wife to spend a night at a Walmart parking lot. She is a RV person and now we are looking to full timing in a few years. Keep working on it. I have two Golden's and a Flat Coat that go with us and the one Golden is very up set all the time. It is for some and for some NOT!

Which means that we will have to keep a home base and if I want to travel as much I do, I will have to go it alone frequently.

Anyone else out there have a part-timer and a full-timer in their household?

i think if you and your wife love each other, this will only cause problems in the long run. there needs to be compromise from you and your wife if you want to remain married, i can understand her not wanting to give up a home and fulltime, and i can understand your wanting to travel for 2-3months out of the year... i also understand when working that couples are sometimes separated because of financial need. the retirement years unless you are retiring young, should be spent together..my husband and i have been married for 47 years and i think we would both be very sad, if we could not reach an agreement on traveling and maintaining a fixed home. in the end, it depends on how you want to spend the remaing years. just my thoughts.

This a very nice and informative thread. I'm traveling solo these days, and I find much wisdom and kindness in the posts I just read. Thanks to you all for sharing.

I'm currently living in my motorhome and my wife is still up North working. We decided that full timing was not a viable option at this time but me going South was not a problem.
She is currently spending Christmas with me in Georgia and I will then take her back up North and spend some time at home.
She realizes that I have SAD and can no longer take the lack of sunshine so she is fine with me going where the sun shines. Even when she retires she will probably not be too far from her elderly parents (85 and 86) so we will continue doing what has worked for us the last 2 years.
As others have said, it's a compromise for both parties.

Mike I hope everything works out for the both of you. I know about the sunshine I can not stand this living in the north.

Both of my marriages had rythem. We danced right into the divorce court. I retired, joined up with a rescue dog and my life has never been so peaceful.

So funny

Hey ralper you made me laugh...

Marriage is hard! In 46 years we both have dreamed of how peaceful a divorce would be---death even better the survivor gets to keep all the money ($10.00)

But we know each other so well no one else would understand our quirks, and he does take out the garbage on a regular basis and puts up with a camping cat because I wanted one.

Merry Christmas
Nancy
