Hi, Jason:

Is it ok to be from western PA? We have a Lodge Dutch oven and used it twice when we were out camping around about week or so ago.

If I assume correctly, I gather that you already have a Dutch oven and want to share recipes and such.

We use ours mostly for making desserts and biscuits. Rready-made mixes like Bisquick are frequently used.

Many of our recipes come from a book purchased at a Boy Scout Shop.

Frank,
We just started with the Dutch Ovens, And are looking for other people like you said. We are going to a DOG in Hickory Run State park Sept 3rd. In White Haven, Pa. If you are going let me know. And yes, it is OK to be from Pittsburgh Pa! I was out there a couple of years ago to do a big rig repo and a friend took us to a deli that put fries and cole slaw on your sandwich. Pamonte bros. or something like that it was great! They also took us to a church turned brew pub, I've found a new religion! Thanks!

Hi, Jason:

I believe they took you to Primanti Brothers; that's where the all sandwiches come with french fries and cole slaw on them. It's a "Burgh" thing. The restaurant started in an area of Pittsburgh known as the Strip District (nothing to do with lewd dancing, folks. It's actually an area where the majority of produce, meat and seafood comes into the city). About 10 years ago, they expanded to several suburban locations. The original restaurant in "the Strip" is a place where truckers go in the middle of the night to eat while their trucks were loaded/unloaded. It ia also a favorite place to eat and "sober up" a bit after all the bars closed. They're known for a curt wait staff and take offense if you ask for your sandwich with the fries and slaw "on the side". They'll respond to your request with words like "I only serve 'em, I don't make 'em.", and your request is ignored.

The "church turned brew pub" is the Penn Brewery on the North Side of Pittsburgh. I'ts a micro-brewery that serves German crusine.

I already have reservations for Oil Creek Family Campground in Titusville for Labor Day weekend.

Make sure you "season" your Dutch oven before you use it. If you don't already have the instructions for performing this procedure, here's a link:

How to Season a Dutch oven

You might also try doing a search on this website for Dutch oven as I think there are postings for recipes an such right on this site.

BTW - What's a DOG?

Ahhh...

I went to an acronym website and found out what DOG (Dutch Oven Gathering) meant. You got me inspired and I did a little searching on the web. I discovered the International Dutch Oven Society. Here's the link for it.

International Dutch Oven Society (IDOS)

I like to attend a DOG sometime if the opportunity arises, just to see what they do at one and learn a few things.
