I have seen on one of the RV TV programs that omelets can be made easily for a large group by placing the ingredients in a ziplock bag then placing it in boiling water. I need help remembering the particulars like how long does the bag stay in the boiling water? What size measurement equals one eggs? What is the difference in boiling time between a two egg bag and a three egg bag? Thanks for your help and time for getting me the receipt. Safe travels, Lonnie

Most recipies call for 1/4 cup to equal 1 egg. The normal boiling time is around 15 minutes for a one egg omelet, but you can just eyeball it until the egg is set and not runny. After a time or two you will have a good idea of lenght of time for more eggs in the bag.

Some folks will yammer about the dangers of cooking in a plastic bag.. I don't listen

I forget how long they cooked 'em when I did it, but as Beaver said, just eyeball it, when you think it's been in long enough extract the bag from the water and take a look.. if it's still runny. drop it back in the pot.

I can attest that the cooking time is 13 minutes. This is a great way to have some fun watching people's reaction to just how good this turns out. Kids love it. For a bunch of people, have their names written on the quart size bags so the "cook" can call their name when they are ready. Each person will have put their favorite ingredients in before hand such as peppers, onions, etc. Other ingredients such as cheese, salsa, etc. can be added afterward.

ZipLock storage bags can release toxins if used for cooking. The quotes below are not my words but IMHO I would not eat anything cooked in ZipLock storage bags without further research.

"The Ziploc Company, S.C Johnson and son, voluntarily affirms that their brand of plastic bags should not be employed for boiling food. They have disclosed that they do not under any circumstances advocate using the bag in boiling water. Zip-lock bags are manufactured from polyethylene plastic which is predisposed to soften when subjected to temperatures in excess of 195 degrees F. The procedure of inserting these plastic bags into a pot of boiling water or just as harmful by placing the boiling water into it, could cause the plastic to commence breaking down and possibly resulting in melting. Since the egg and cheese contained in an omelet includes fat of their own the mixture tends to get even hotter then the boiling water."

"The major concern here is of course the possible contamination of the food as well as the cancer causing carcinogens resulting from the chemical decomposition of the plastic bag. This does not however preclude the use of the bag for mixing ingredients or to store the various constituents that survivalists generally require. The problem is the bag chemical breaks down under the high temperatures. The associated heat is what chemically breaks down the Zip-lock. The company has stated that the Zip-lock bag was never designed or approved for subjection to these extremes of heat found when boiling and they do not recommend such procedures."

"Any concerns which you may be having about the use of zip-locks and your food can be answered by contacting S.C. Johnson and Son at 866-231-5406 or you may visit their website at Ziplock."

This is SUCH a great idea!! I thought of the Food Saver bags when I was first read this. They are made to boil, freeze, microwave, etc. It's not like I would be doing it every day, so the extra cost is no biggie.
Thanks for posting!
Sheila :)

I have made "Baggie Omelettes" a few times when we had a large crowd over for breakfast and they have always been a big hit. I know that I had been warned to only use "freezer" bags as they are a heavier (thicker) plastic and would resist melting and chemical breakdown in the boiling water.

Try them....good eats!!
