Over at Southern Metal Spinners in Australia http://www.southern-metal-spinners.com.au/ they have what they call a Camp Oven Mate, which is really a lovely wind break.

I hope that picture shows up. On the web page the Camp Oven Mate is clearly labelled and is in the bottom row, 2nd from the right.

Does anyone know of anything at all like this made in North America?

Of course, what I'm looking for is a windbreak. Other ideas very welcome.

Buy some galvenized sheet metal called "flashing" at Home Depot. Get a width a little taller than your DO. Cut a length that will make a complete circle around your DO and hold the circle of sheet metal together with any kind of metal spring clamp (I use metal spring paper clips). I recommend cutting some small notches out of the bottom of the ring of sheet metal so the bottom coals can get some air.

Most campgrounds have a fire ring that works perfectly for me. I usually prop one side up a little to allow a small amount of air to enter. I set my dutch ovens directly over the bottom coals. This method keeps the coals burning slowly all day. The only coals I need to change are the ones on the lid.

Many of us do not stay in cgs any more than we have to, yet we want to cook safely with our Dutch Ovens. Also, a lot of this cook this way at home, too.

The flashing idea is great as a windbreak in general.

What I think the Camp Oven Mate has going for it is keeping the heat in and extending the Dutch Oven season.
