Has anyone tried this before? I'm not talking about dehydrated, but the vacuum sealed backpacking food (like the "astronauts ice cream").

Found a supply of my Mountain House survival food and threw it on the camper.

For fun I let the kids make it (hot water and let sit for 10 minutes). It was incredible for instant food. Chicken A La King and Turkey Tetrazini. And the granola for breakfast w/ instant milk was a big hit, too.

I'm thinking of selling this stuff; I think it's perfect RV food, since it keeps indefinitely and it's really easy to "cook" on the road!

From my perspective the perfect RV food is a bone in Rib Eye with a dry spice rub of salt, pepper, cayenne and coriandor, cooked over mesquite wood outdoors under the stars. Serve it up with some garlic mashed... again cooked in a iron kettle over the fire. Match that with a salad and a moonrise over the mountains and you have a scenario that is hard to beat.

It is funny how taste can differ from person to person. I am in no way casting disparagement for dehydrated or vacumn sealed meals. I know there are some great ones out there and it sounds like the Mountain House brand is quite tasty.

It is just after 20 years of "backpacking" and eating dehydrated food and the occasional high country trout (Those are good)my wife and family finally revolted. They would not go into the wilderness any longer without all the tools to cook outdoors just like we do at home. I can no longer put anything in front of my team that comes sealed or you have to rehydrate.I do most of the cooking in and outdoors so we had to scale the camping scene up a notch or two.

I would say that two of the major reasons we have a class A today is due to comfortable mattresses and the ability to cook huge.

Fascinating how that works out.

Good luck with the instant food sales!

Martin,

I can understand why you'd prefer a steak to freeze-dried food, but it never hurts to keep an emergency supply on hand that doesn't need a grill or fridge.

Remember this story
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/...n1428491.shtml

This family survived on dehydrated food for 17 days.
Not that I think we'll ever be lost in a snow storm when campig

I'm just saying it never hurts to be prepared. What if we were stuck somewhere or just traveling and don't want to take time for a lot of cooking.

To be honest, I haven't tried other brands. I can't imagine there is that much difference, though.

I went ahead and signed on as an affiliate at Nitro-Pak. They sell a lot of different varieties. I am going to order a bunch and try them on some of our trips this year. I'll be sure to post reviews on our blog and site!

Amy
