Oil change

What constitutes an oil change?? Miles??

ottffss 12-21-2011 06:38 PM

Not to be funny, but changing the oil "constitutes" an oil change.

The interval is dependent on miles, engine hours, how used, where used, type of driving/use, oil analysis, engine condition, filter changes, filter type, and many other conditions/factors.

A recommended change interval is suggested by the engine manufacturer - often for private vehicles in "typical" use this is stated in "miles and/or months" whichever occurs first.

What are you trying to get at with your question???

Yes miles are indeed important however time also factors into the equasion. You should change your oil at minimum once a year all else being equal. ;)

Have a nice Holiday.

I change mine when I winterize for the season. We don't put a lot of miles on our coach, but I just feel better putting her (and her genny) to bed with a fresh oil change.

That is in line with the engine manufacturers recommendations. Store with new oil in it so the acid causing impurities are washed out.

Anyone else want to chime in?? We're not storing for the winter

In general, 'miles' is not the criteria for most RVers, because most RVers spend more time camping than driving. In general, the more often you change your oil the better, though overzelous oil changing will bring no added benefit, it certainly will do no harm other than to your wallet.

I would follow my engine manufacturer's recommendations were I you.

Your owners manual will give a mileage or time for an oil change. On ours it's 15,000 miles OR 1 year, which ever occurs first. In this case you choose the one that comes first. So far it's been every year as we never approach 15,000 miles in a year.
Both our cars have maintenance meters built in, they tell us when to change based on miles driven and use. Usually it's around 7,000 miles on them but the oil change places INSIST that we change every 3 months. I figure the manufacturer knows their product better than the oil change places.

If you think you got alot of help on oil change intervals--wait til you ask about: engine coolant, hydraulic fluid, transmission fluid, and brake fluid.

PS...and dont forget the differential....and the front wheel hubs..

You have an Alpine Coach with a big Cummins diesel engine. You change the oil once a year unless you drive continually from one end of the country to the other and then mileage may be a factor.

Thanks

IIRC Cummins recomends oil change at 6000 miles for the "98's and "99's. (the 8.3 engine).

Consider using synthetic oil. I'm a huge believer. It's more expensive, but worth it.

Thank you Jeff. That's what I wanted to hear.
