Towing

What do I need to know about towing a vehicle with a Class A motorhome? Such as automatic, standard, types of towing mechanism etc... Thanks!

Methods such as tow dolly, 4 down, etc. and the equipment options/requirements are commonly discussed topics, suggest to use the search feature to gain knowledge then post remaining and specific questions.

You will need to know the towing capacity of your motorhome and hitch. Then depending on the type of vehicle you consider for towing, you'll need a towbar, baseplate, breakaway, supplemental brake, and wiring for lights. :D

Oh...and welcome to the forum. :wavey:

I'm one of the few that has towed the same vehicle ('05 Odyssey) behind the same MH ('02 Dutch Star DP) both four down and on a dolly.
Last time we towed four down was from WA to Phoenix. Put a new battery in the Ody and still had it go dead three times. When we got back I needed an alignment on the Ody and there were lots of new chips.
Will town on the Demco KK-460 dolly from now on.
1. No dead battery
2. No rock chips
3. No $100+ alignment needed
4. No worries about ruining the transmission
5. No worries about ruining the brakes on the Ody.
I also find the dolly just as easy and as quick to hook up as the brackets, towbar, lights and braking system.

Are you buying the toad based on what you discover from this search? Usually folks just try to tow what they have...4 down, dolly, or trailer.

If you are buying the toad, then I would think you would want to focus on what kind of car you will want that fits the max weight of your RV's GVWR.

Like is a Jeep needed for ventures off the beaten path, or would a simple economy car fit your needs, or like many of us, you need a small SUV.

Best of luck in your search.

Wrangler. 4 down. Xfer case in N, trans in P, lock and go. And then go off-road to see what regular tourists do not.
Just sayin....

Alx, there are a number of vehicles that can be towed 4 down. We have towed three different ones. Never a problem. Look at fmca.com they have a current and older list of towables by year and mfg. you may luck out and find that what you currently are driving will qualify. Good luck and happy camping. Clark
