propane water heater

My 6gal propane water heater will not ignite in my 5th wheel - 1990 Fleetwood Wilderness w/ Atwood Propane tank. Gas range works but not water heater. Happened after I changed tanks.
I've tried everything including waiting for extra gas to escape, etc. Checked connects and they look good. Don't know what to do. Getting frustrated. Please help.

What brand of WH is it?
Does it have DSI?
Does it spark?
Is there propane in the tank?
Is the tank turned on?
Have the propane been turned off lately?
Do other propane appliances work?

You should provide a little more info to get some good answers.

yes I did everything. I did say that my gas range works and I said the brand is atwood. Yes, tanks have propane and turned on. Propane was turned off to switch tanks. What is DSI?

DSI is electric iginition of your water heater, you push a button and it automatically starts your water heater from inside your RV.

I would say keep trying, you probably just have air in the lines, now I know range works but you may have air in the line between main feed and water heater.

You apparently edited your original post as the quote in my post is what I read.

DSI = Direct Spark Ignition.
So, does your WH have a standing pilot or DSI?

sreverhart 11-26-2012 07:06 PM

oh, then that would be a dsi. The switch is in my kitchen and it remains red after turning it on. I waited for excess gas or air to escape but nothing happens. It's been over 4 hours since I changed my tanks and nothing.

How do I get rid of the air?

The water heater control circuit will try to light the propane 3 times, then shut off. I think you have to reset it to get it to try again. When you try to start the WH, go outside and listen to hear if you hear the ignitor "clicking". If so, you probably just have to continue to try to get it to start until the air eventually works it's way out.

The WH gas valve will not allow gas to pass unless it is lit after "x" time limit. "x' is not very long. I would think several times of trying to ignite it would allow the air to be pushed out and allow the burner to ignite. If it is not lit gas (or air) will only escape while you hear the ignition sparking.

There is no clicking

sreverhart 11-26-2012 07:23 PM

How long does it take for the air to clear? It's been over 4 hours and I still can't get it to light. I've been trying every 15 mins.

jesilvas 11-26-2012 07:25 PM

If it's not sparking, it won't start. That's your ignition.

KIX 11-26-2012 07:30 PM

If it's not sparking, it won't start. That's your ignition.
And, if it's not clicking then no gas (or air) is coming out of the gas line at the WH.
If it's not clicking then turn the ignition switch off and leave it alone for 10 minutes and then retry it. The 10 minutes is (I'm guessing) the reset time mentioned in post #8

sreverhart 11-26-2012 07:33 PM

Okay I'll try again, but I've waited in 15 minute intervals already. I hear nothing when I turn the switch on.
