Towed Brakes
 
How important is it to have an auxillary braking system on my towed vehicle? I am pulling a 2017 ford explorer behind a 40Ft. discovery diesel pusher.

Hot topic. Many states have a auxiliary brakes requirement based upon towed vehicle weight. Lot’s of opinions. Use the search and type in “toad”.

The brake laws vary by state. You must comply with each and every states laws, there is no reciprocity on braking requirements. What is legal in one state may not be legal in the next one. Very few states classify a towed as a trailer so those laws don't apply. Get brakes and use them!

I agree, but most states will require the OP to haul a Ford Explorer with an auxiliary braking system.

Brakes on a towed vehicle are likely to be considered reasonable and customary by any judge hearing litigation arising from damage caused by a breakaway. I'd have them to protect my retirement.

Good point. I think that virtually all states require a breakaway braking system on a 4000 pound trailer anyway.

After reading at several different times people having their tow bar break on one side or another problem. I would rather have a brake system just in case. I would not want my towd coming loose and head on into traffic. If its made by humans then it can happen. Just saying!

Exactly, why would anyone even consider towing a 4000 lb. Chunk of steel without brakes or more importantly a breakaway system.

Contrary to what others may say there is no best. Many of us use the Air Force One brake system:

I just found a fleetmaster brake pro model 9300 but not sure its a desirable system. Do any of you more experienced RVers have any opinions on this system ? Good or bad.

I found a used fleetmaster brake pro model 9300 but not sure if this is a desirable system. Anybody out there know anything good or bad ?

I just bought a Blue Ox Patriot on Craigslist for 250 bucks. All systems have their +/-
You just need to pick what works for you. For me, saving a grand was the deciding factor.
