F53 & Longer Coach
 
Iím going to buy a new MH, probably Newmar, on a gas chassis. Iíve owned 31 ft class Cís on the E450 chassis, but Iím having trouble understanding putting a 38í or 39í coach on the same drive train. I know the chassis will be 26,000 lb, but the HP and torque will be the same as the E450, right?

Is there a practical length limit for the F53?

I believe that " some of the same drive train " would be more correct .
Differential under an E-450 wouldn't support the weight of a 26,000 lb chassis .

Differential gearing and RPM at speed in relation to the torque curve of the engine are all factors .

Note I'm not a Ford fan , but I'm sure they wouldn't make these chassis if they felt they couldn't guarantee it would do the job.

GM supplied the 8.1 with and Allison the 1000 series automatic to Workhorse for years , and there are a lot of those still on the road. BUT the weight limitations of the W-22 chassis were a big factor.

We have a 38í Newmar Bay Star on the F53 chassis and tow a 2010 CRV. Iím not the fastest up the hill, but Iíve had no issues getting where I want to go. Also, you canít really get too many places in Oregon with out going over a mountain.

My MH measures 36ft 2inches and I don't feel it is under powered. I tow a CRV too and it does the job well. My worst mpg is 6 and my best is 8 depending on weather and hills. I have 32,000 miles on it now. I do have 5star tune installed.

It's not the same drive train. The engines have the same displacement but different heads, number of valves, horsepower and torque output, etc.

Also before deciding on a motorhome you should consider what you will be towing. The weight of the fully loaded MH and this towed vehicle and what the limitations will be. Another consideration is the ratio of MH length to wheel base. Google motorhome safety length to wheelbase and get an idea of what I'm trying to convey. Good luck and enjoy safe RVing. :thumb:

The F53 will only tow 5,000 lbs if the coach is loaded. Pay attention to the payload (CCC) capacity of the coach to make sure it's what you need. I looked at an F53 based coach last winter that only had a payload of about 1,300 lbs. Not nearly enough. The length to wheel base ratio should be at least 55%, the more the better. It helps prevent tail wag or so they say. There are those that disagree. Good luck.

I have read opinions on this forum, just opinions, that they believe anything over 34' and you should really be thinking diesel pusher. That might be true but then there is the issue of paying for it.

As far as comparing the E450 and the different GVWs of the F-53, you should look at the spec charts when it comes to torque differences and gear ratio differences. As was already commented, the E450 and the F53 with the many different GVW ratings it comes in are two different vehicles completely. The V10 is a bit different, 305 HSP vs 320, 2 valve vs 3 valve. Then there are the differences in 16" wheels vs 22.5"....

We have a 38' motorhome on the F-53 chassis. We travedl comfortably at 57 to 62 mph without any problem. We tow a 2018 Equinox. 40 mph up steep grades, but most of the traffic isn't going much faster. I can buy a lot of gas for the difference in cost between F-53 an a diesel pusher..

Thanks all for the chassis explanation. We are experienced motor home owners, but I didnít understand the details of the F53. We tow a CRV, and Iím very careful with loading and weights, and the wheelbase issue. Iím more comfortable now as we look for a new unit. Thanks again.

Bob,

Ford uses three differentials on their chassis. Their CD's list them. I don't have a CD with me but I know the Dana-80 is used on the 16-K, 18-K and maybe the 20-K. Why do I think that. Look at the leaf springs and they all have painted those three weights on them. And I have a friend with a 16,000 chassis that uses the Dana 80.

Those of us who wonder why the f-53 has such a lousy ride consider these facts. Ford uses the same leaf spring for three weight chassis and the same shock for all weight chassis. That makes a lot of sense????

I don't know the other 2 differentials but they list them by chassis weight on the tech CD's so they do make allowances for the different chassis weights.

A coach on the F53 24,000 pound chassis has a GCWR of 30,000 pounds and the capability to tow 6000 pounds when at GVWR, provided the hitch used is suitably rated.

I agree one must look carefully at the payload a coach provides--my 2016 Tiffin 32SA was offered on both the 22 and 24K chassis. Mine, on the 24K, when fully loaded for full time living and with gas and water weighs 22,500 pounds, 1500 under GVWR. And 500 over the GVWR of the 22K chassis.
