I agree it was probably a poor connection and not a direct short, it probably just overheated because it had to much of a load. Usually it's the neutral that overheats.

Just my $.02 but after towing a 38' 5th wheel with a dually and having a blow out on the rear I can say the dually is the way to go. I felt totally safe and was able to pull over with no problems....
