I had the same problem on my CUMMINS 400 hp ISL. The bottom rad clamp failed on the road and I lost all the coolant.

It's not a gas spring. It is the hydraulic cylinder that moves the slide. If the piston rod is bent, it's likely the cylinder has been damaged internally and is bypassing hydraulic fluid.
