That period has little to do with oil consumption (I've never had to add oil to a B-series Cummins). Rather, fuel consumption typically improves up to 20,000 miles.

The diesel option will pay for itself (at least here in Texas) over a gas engine at the time of sale or trade-in. In the meantime, one has the advantages of better fuel economy and much better towing...
