I agree that if a major failure occurred on the trip home, offer a refund or pick up the cost of the repair even.
I have to draw the line on phone calls about a 25-year old engine knocking when cold? What's this guy thinking? Did he get buyer's remorse? Has he let the fear of the unknown get to him? Maybe it did start knocking after you dropped it off, but you should not sweat that. If you knew nothing about it, your conscience should be clear. Knocking and blowing up are two different things.
Did he or the RV auction house put any gas in it? Maybe it was cheap stuff with the octane too low? I was surprised to see very low octane gas out west at elevation for cheap. I guess the elevation allows you to run lower octane?
Tell him to run a tank full of higher octane gas through it and see if it gets better.
