Generally the accepted time frame is every 15K miles or 1 year, whichever is sooner. You can always have the oil tested if there is a question, but I figure which is more expensive, and oil change (with all filters) or and engine rebuild because of bad oil????

Usually I change mine every year. But I just had an oil analysis done by Blackstone Labs, and they said I was good for at least another 7K. I'm going to do another oil check at 5K since it's cheap to get it done. Only $15.

I drove my Cummins less than 3,000 miles last year and it is stored indoors when not on the road. I do my own service and an oil change is under $100, so I just go for it. I suppose if I were paying $400-$500 for, that service I would do the sample. I realize of course that the sample advises on other factors than is a change is due.

I also drive the coach about 6000-7000 miles/year, so change the oil yearly rather than on mileage. I do my own, so oil & filter for the Cummins ISL (8.9L) comes to a bit over $100.

The newer common rail injection style Cummins engines used in motor homes have a 20K interval recommendation. As with the older ones the yearly service still applies.
I recently had an oil analysis done by Blackstone just to get an idea of the general engine condition. The results said there was a trace amount of elements in the oil consistent with the compounds in ethylene glycol coolant. If I hadn't spent the money on that test I would have had no indication of a potential problem.
