If you are in a marginal area for TV reception, and it sounds like you are, the antenna needs to be pointed towards the best signal for the TV to campture the channel during the search mode. Use the following guide to help you determine the compass heading of the signals. Turn your antenna to that direction, then run your search. AntennaPoint.com - Antenna Locator

Looking in the cabinet were the switches are. There isn't any switch box up there other than the 110 plug..
When I got home today I ran a cable a Direct TV receiver in the garage.
I had all the channels just like in the house.
Sounds like my antenna my not be amplified.
I was thinking when the selector switch was turned on that powered up the antenna.
I guess I need to get up on the roof and check for a power source.

There won't be a power source on the roof! The antenna power should be a very small diameter button on a plate inside the cabinet with the switcher. The plate should have a coax connector that connects the outside antenna to the switch box. I you don't find it, I'll make a pic of mine so you can see what it looks like.

Hi Joe.
That would be great if you can send a photo of the switch location.
Thank you.

This is what mine looks like. The little black button on the bottom turns the power on and off. The tiny green lights shows when the power is on. Sorry for the poor pic quality, but it was hard to get a decent photo inside the cabinet!

There is NO such thing as a digital antenna.........
With a modern TV (not an old analog box TV set) I can get OTA signals with a metal coat hanger.
The TV tuner is digital.......not the antenna

OP..........
Does your 'selector box' look something like this???
If so 12V DC should connect to terminals in back and then when TV ANT is selected the 12V DC goes up coax cable to crank up antenna head (where amplifier is)
(Some units have an ON/OFF which has to be ON when using TV antenna and OFF when using cable/sat etc.)
You then need to AIM antenna head towards TV Transponder Towers
You then need to have TV Input set to 'Air' (antenna)
You then need to do a channel scan for available signals
IF you have the old analog box TVs you would need a 'digital converter box' hooked up also
Best is newer modern TV with digital tuners.

Thanks for the photo of the switch plate.
I will go look this weekend.
My selector box look similar to that one posted, mine does have the on/ off switch..mine is probably an older model.
I'll look as see it it has 12 volts to it.
Thanks for all the replies..

Not really. If you can receive a stable signal with the old analog antenna there will be no improvement switching it to a "digital antenna". In a strong signal area, a 3" piece of wire will normally work just fine. That's what I do at home as a backup for Direct TV and can receive 22 digital channels.

If you ran a coax cable to the Directv receiver, that is an analog signal. You will still need a digital converter box for the old TV. We had one of those go bad BTW and it took a while to figure out why we only got a few channels.
Old fashion rabbit ears will work for digital TV signal BTW.

Some of the Wineguard switch boxes that control all of the various TV's DVD's etc has the antenna amplifier built in. All you have to do is turn it on.

I think you may have to provide an external 12VDC source connected to the "12VDC" terminals on the back! Since the switcher doesn't plug into a 120 VAC power source, there's nowhere to get that power for the antenna.
