Stiff steering 2013 Holiday Rambler Ambassador
Does anyone with a 2013 Holiday Rambler Ambassador 40DFT have stiff steering problems? Is it normal? Sometimes when in a tight spot the steering wheel becomes harder to turn as if the pump is not supplying enough fluid.

eddieO,
My 07 DIplomat was real hard steering when maneuvering slowly. It had a Sheppard M100 steering gear and also had about 3/4" steering backlash. After watching CrazyKnight's post, I decided to replace my Sheppard gear with a TRW to eliminate the backlash. One of the benefits was that the TRW came with a lighter torsion rod (this affects steering effort), and all of a sudden, my coach can be maneuvered with one finger. If you have a Sheppard steering gear, this may be your issue too.

X2 on the TRW swap! Steering is much smoother and easier now.

I have the same rig, never noticed a stiff steering problem. Have a qualified RV mechanic check it out. I had thought that I had too much play in the wheel, but after really paying attention, I realized that it was really the road.

Maybe Long Island Mac's coach already has the TRW gear. I understand these coaches were made in 2 different locations, one in Oregon the other in Indiana, mines was made in Oregon. Does anyone know how to determine which steering gear my coach has.

Just checked the sheet from the 419 DP club. They sent me a complete list of all items with MFG, model # and serial #. I have the Sheppard model # HD94PQ31. Still think that most of the roads that have been worn, cause the play, but have been know to be wrong before!!

Actually the Sheppard is a very good steering box for rough or "worn" roads. It is preferred for off road use as not to jar the driver's arms as the wheels go back and forth over uneven terrain. Change out the box to a Ross TRW and your coach will go where the steering wheel is pointed. Check out Crazyknight's thread on box swap. deSanford
