Alberta Canada

We are planning a trip to Banff/ Jasper this summer. Our initial route is through Bozeman to Yellowstone then across I-90 to I- 15 into Calgary, Alberta. From there we need help planning the route. Is Ca 93 drivable at 45 feet plus a toad?
Are there nice full hook up campgrounds we should book? From there likely headed to Minot, ND for a rally.
Thanks

We've traveled and towed the car on a dolly that direction before. In general the roads are excellent. We ran from Lethbridge over to Calgary on CA 4,3,2, then to Banff. Not a lot to see but vast plains and farmlands from the border on 15 to Banff. But it is a very enjoyable and comfortable drive. Looking forward to doing it again. Always love camping at Tunnel Mountain in Banff and at Lake Louise

US93 and CA93 are the same road, the Icefields Parkway from Banff to Jasper. It is a toll toad. Suggestion, after Yellowstone, head west to Missoula and take 93 north thru Montana to Canada, and on to the TransCanada at Banff/Lake Louise. Works for us in a 40' 5th behind a long bed dually and/or a 42'MH with toad.

What time of year? Early July is calgary stampede and most campgrounds are full around calgary. I'm on my phone so linking is not great but I'll mention a couple off memory.

Tunnel mountain in Banff is a must if you can get reservations. It is a national park campground and you MUST have reservations. I'd stay there as long as possible and day trip from there. Make reservations in January when they open up the reservation system.

Jasper is much better in my mind and the national campgrounds there are nice. Wapiti campground is my favourite.

Highway 93 is driveable in a motorhome with toad. Just not many places to stop. Columbia ice fields has a parking lot campground no services.

A few to start.

All good advice. Beware that in Jasper, the Whistler campground will be closed ALL year for renovations. This will put a huge amount of pressure on the remaining campgrounds! If you don't prebook somewhere before hand, you WILL NOT find something when you get there! It's going to be a very busy year in Jasper. There is a koa in Hinton about 60 miles east of Jasper (not too bad ) that may be bookable. On Jan 1 at 00.00 the reservation system opens. Good luck but it is worth it!

Good info in this thread and of our several visits we did Banff to Jasper most recently 2 years ago in our 31 ft gasser (F53) towing a car on a dolly.

We have come to believe this is one of the most beautiful roads in North America. Make sure you fuel up before departing the Calgary/ Jasper area if northbound. You won't run out , but you may want to take advantage of access and pricing before departing the Calgary region. There was one rather steep extended grade after a large extended hairpin turn before arriving at Columbia Icefields/Athebasca Glacier but we pulled it just fine with the gasser.

At the intersection of 93 and 11 (The Crossing) there is a rest stop/resort/fuel/food stop.

We never do this trip without making reservations. Summer visitation in this region is very high.As stated earlier reservations at Tunnel Mountain, Lake Louise and Jasper (Wapiti CG)are a must if you can get them. The Hinton KOA mentioned earlier is also a great CG but a bit east of the mountains.

Also do not miss Athabasca Falls northbound on 93 after leaving the Columbia Icefields attraction. Good motorhome parking at both these locations.

The Columbia Icefield bus tour is a bit pricey but its a wonderful experience you don't want to miss if you've never been on a glacier.

It is the road trip of a lifetime so by all means do it! And have the camera ready at all times!

Joe

Thank you for all of the great info. We will be visiting Banff/ Jasper this September. We have already made our reservations... SOOOOO glad we are going in September, because I do not believe that there are any consecutive open days remaining in the Summer. Fills up fast!

You will have a great time! I would love to answer the Wapiti campground questions but I stay at whistlers only . While I've been through it on foot, never really paid attention to manoeuvring there. I have seen big 5th there so I'll assume you will be OK?
September is a great time as the kids are back in school so retirees and Europeans will be the norm. Enjoy!

Sept. is a great time to go but there is chance of cool weather. We have been snowed on in Nordegg in Sept. which is just east of the crossing on 93. Usually nothing to worry about but make sure you have some warm clothes just in case.
