Handicap toad

My wife is in a wheelchair most of the time now and we're looking for a handicapped accessible toad. There are lots of conversion Van's available, but I would need use a dolly to pull them. Has anyone found something that can be flat towed and wheelchair friendly?

Thanks
Dan Dugan

We have a lift on the back of our car for the wheelchair. My wife can transfer to the passenger seat as it is low enough. The old Dodge Caravan conversions could be towed if you had a transmission pump installed. Check with Remco to see which vans can be modified.

My wife is in a chair full time now with her MS and our toad is a 05 Honda Odyssey that I bought used and it works great u just have let idle before towing and it is a auto...Currently she can still transfer but the Van can also be converted or converted for a ramp and ones are pretty common and up to a 09 or 10 will work ...not sure on 1st year of this van that could be flat towed.
Hope this helps...Jay

Another vote for the Honda Odyssey. I set up our 2011 for flat towing even though that year isn't officially certified for such by Honda. The type of automatic transmission is critical. Here's a link to another discussion that may be helpful:

Note that if you add significant weight with a wheelchair lift or ramp, and you have a 5,000 lb limit, you'll be overweight.

Kia Soul dual clutch modified by Freedom Motors

We purchased a dual clutch Kia Soul and had a ramp put in the back by Freedom motors, of Battle Creek MI. Back seats taken out and floor lowered. The wheelchair user is in the back and the driver and one passenger in the front. Weight about 3500 lbs.

Rough costs
Soul $30k
Freedom motors $20k
Camping world tow equipment $6k

There is a discussion on the Soul towing elsewhere

Dan, not sure if you are full time or not, but if you tend to stay in one location for a longer time, maybe rent the vehicle that comes closest to your/her needs.
