Motorcycle Carry Behind Rear Radiator
I am considering purchasing a diesel pusher with a rear radiator. I have a small motorcycle that I currently carry on an aluminum rack. I am wondering if the heat from the rear radiator would be a problem? I would especially like to hear from folks that have done this. Thanks in advance for your responses!

I carried a Dresser on the back of our '03 Phaeton with a rear radiator. No issues with the heat at all. It just gets dirty. I wrapped it with a soft flannel sheet and the cover over the top. Some dust will still get in, but pretty clean after 1800 miles. If you wrap it, tie the wrapping down so it does not move or flap in the breeze.

Are you concerned about heat from the engine affecting your bike or about the bike affecting the airflow causing your coach to overheat? If it's the former I have never experienced a problem. If it's the latter you might have a problem but I doubt it.
I carry a 500# all up bike on a VersaHaul with a 500# limit behind my DP. I also pull a 3000# all up weight toad attached to the bike carrier which has a 3000# tow limit. All the receiver and hitch tow limits and tongue weight limits are well... within limits. The bike and carrier do add some weight to the rear axle and removes some from the front axle.
I have towed the coach with bike all over for 20,000+ miles including several times over 9,000+ foot passes in the Rockies without problems. I do rely heavily on my ScanGaugeD for accurate coolant and transmission temperatures from the ECM. I won't leave home without it. At those altitudes I usually take the toad off the dolly and have the DW drive behind me just to go easy on the equipment.
I have a heavy nylon cover designed for bikes on trailers but found it holds a lot of dirt that accumulates on the bike under the cover while travelling. When you're camped it does fine.[emoji41]
One consideration is you might have to remove the bike every time you want to check the oil, coolant or power steering fluid.

WE see it all the time. In fact we carry two adult bikes that are completely covered in nylon with no problem over the last year.

Just to bring up a point about hitch for pondering. The weight specs on a hitch are based on a dead weight on a trailer ball mounted approximately 8 inches from the end of the receiver. Because of this that spec is not accurate when you put weight in a carrier or a rack or an extension etc. That is why hitch extensions derate the dead weight capacity of the hitch.

Well jd,
WE did just what you're thinking about. I mounted a Hydralift carrier on the back of our '04 Itasca Horizon 36GD with the CAT C-7 330HP and, carried a Honda GL 1800 Goldwing on there for over 2 years and over 8,000 miles. I too was a bit concerned about the heat from the engine, blasting against that nice paint on the Wing.
At the time, we lived in San Diego and, for our first trip with all that on the coach, we did a trip that involved I-15 N through Vegas. And if any of you have been on that section of I-15 from San Diego to Vegas, you'll know the rather long, semi-steep grades near Baker CA. My temp rose quite a bit on that and, I had to pull over to let the big beast cool down a tad.
While stopped, I went back to check on the bike to make sure it hadn't melted off the back of the coach. All was well, the bike, and its paint, faired just fine. The over heating of the coach was due to a clogged set of radiator fins, that I knew nothing about, waaaaaaay back then. It's since been remedied. But, other than that, we had ZERO issues carrying that bike, on that coach and, towing various toads.

I should add that the 1000# dresser and 150# carrier on the back of my '03 Phaeton caused the OEM 255/80/22.5 tires to be overloaded along with the 20,000# rear axle. Because of that, at my request, Bob Tiffin paid 50% of the cost to replace all six tires with 275/80/22.5 new tires. That gesture and others have made me a loyal and proud Tiffin owner. I wasn't too concerned with the axle overload and it never became a problem.

I have the same setup use a Versahaul to carry a Burgman 400. We then tow a Mini behind the Burgman. Has been a great setup.

One thing to consider: If you put your bikes behind toad and then put a cover on them it will likely cover tail lights. Cops don't like that.
