Thor Industries - 4 Winds & Damon Motorcoaches

I wanted to visit the Thor displays in particular the 4 Winds and Damon exhibits because I thought that I would see some change over there and I was not disappointed. Arriving at 4 Winds I met up with Jon Krider who works in marketing the 4 Winds Serrano and other models in their lineup. We spoke for a while and caught up on old times. Jon actually participated in our Chat Rooms in the past and we spoke about that. Jon was very busy at the show and I had to catch him in between customers.

I asked Jon how the Serrano line was coming along and he said that it was doing great but like everything else it could be doing a lot better. There aren’t a lot of customers now days and getting folks on board to buy new motorhomes has been a challenge to say the least. Last year 4 Winds introduced the Serrano on a single model. I had an opportunity to review that model and go over all the features of the 2009 Serrano motorhome. At that time what I commented on was the smaller size, rounded body features, 19.5 inch tires, lighter weight yet full featured with luxury amenities.

2010 4 Winds Serrano on the W20D Workhorse

The Class A line of 4 Winds motorcoaches begins with very popular Hurricane, moves up to the Windsport and tops out with the Serrano. Both the Hurricane and Windsport are exclusive to Ford Chassis in both 22K and 26K variants however Workhorse does provide a 16K and an 18K chassis for use in the lighter floorplans. The Serrano is only available on the Workhorse W20D 20.5K front diesel chassis. Since the introduction of the Serrano was in 2009, I wanted to follow up on that for 2010.

In 2010 Workhorse continues to provide the W20D however 4 Winds has expanded the line to an additional floorplan. Serrano is now available in a 31V like last year and this year they have introduced a new 31Z. The 31V has a raised bed platform with a huge storage space under the bed which is accessed from both sides of the rig and opposing seating in 2 slideouts. The 31Z features a mid galley on the curb side and the couch and dinette are adjacent in the street side slideout. Like the 31V the Z has a raised bed platform and large pass through storage compartment under the bedroom floor.

Looking in toward the cockpit one can’t help but notice the walnut burl trim features, the large steering wheel, full instrumentation including the new style IP. Both Serrano models feature the use of the MaxxForce 7 engine rated at 230HP with 620 lb/ft of torque and mated to the Allison 1000Mh 6-Speed transmission. The dog house on the Serrano is pleasantly not very invasive into the cockpit area and access to the leather surface seats is quite easy. See the release in RV Industry News.

Concluding my visit I shook Jon’s hand and we agreed to stay in touch. I have known Jon for approximately 6 years. He would be the go to guy to answer any questions about any of the 4 Winds Motorcoaches.

Just moving straight across the aisle, the Damon Avanti was the first thing that came into focus. The Avanti was introduced last year on the Workhorse W16D chassis which featured the MaxxForce5 engine and 1000MH 6-Speed transmission. Going forward the MaxxForce5 was going to be difficult to bring up to 2010 emissions and it was decided that Workhorse would no longer offer the product to the OEMs. The W16 returns to its original role as a commercial product.

Serrano Pass Through Storage

The 2010 Damon Avanti is now mounted on a Freightliner Chassis called the MC-L. According to recent press, The MC-L is powered by a Cummins® ISB 6.7-liter electronic diesel engine with up to 200 hp and 520 ft. lbs. of torque with an Allison® automatic six-speed transmission, the MC-L offers outstanding power and performance. An up to 50-degree wheel cut allows for superior maneuverability, assisting RV owners as they traverse through urban settings and tight spaces.

For more information on the Freightliner MC-L please see the release located in the RV Industry News.

2010 Damon Avanti looking Aft

The Damon Avanti’s that was shown at the RVIA Expo has changed somewhat from featuring a platform bed to a side bed mounted against the street side wall. This single slide 31ft 10” motorhome is claimed to be one of the most aerodynamic coaches built. The Avanti has a dinette in the street side slideout, galley aft of the dinette with a couch opposite of the dining area. The shower and bathroom are opposite and separate the bedroom from the rest of the coach.

Based on a 208” wheelbase the Avanti retains its 16,000 GVW rating and has a combined weight rating of 20,000 pounds offering the owner the capability of pull along up to a 4,000 toad. Although the Damon website has not been updated as of this writing I expect that it will be shortly.

We bought a 2010 Serrano in September - we love it but it has developed a "cracking, creaking noise" seemingly from the dashboard on the drivers' side. Dealer's service department was unable to locate and fix. Has anyone else had this problem? We actually have an appt to take it back to the factory.

Our Avanti3106 has similar sounds. I believe it has to do with the plastic panel connections on driver's side.
