Seeing the USA - The Bucket List

Posted 02-27-2014 at 05:47 AM by DSL417

27 Feb 2014 - after getting first year service, beth and I began what is really out first year of doing full time the way we wanted (the first year had too many family things required). After spending four months in Williston Crossings RV Resort in Florida, we headed out for points West. First stop i Ft Worth Tx. Boondocking en route. A little concerned as the first two out of four nights doing this last year was a disaster with generator not working properly, a slide malfunction, and a non-start. Two nights now...no problems other than rain (trashed our beautiful clean coach), a really crummy I10 west of New Orleans, and a 20 mph crosswind. Finished a 600+ mile leg yesterday. Looking forward to what the Summer holds for us.

2 Mar 2014 - Second year on I20 in late Feb/early Mar. Got to be the worst road for weather ever experienced. Last time strong crosswinds and white out blizzard conditions. This time crosswinds and freezing rain. Just too much windshield for the defroster to keep up with the ice...particularly when trucks give you a coating of H2O as they go by.

On a positive side, what a pleasant surprise to get off the interstate and travel some highways towards Roswell NM...a lot of farming country and more oil wells than I could count. Wished I held the mineral rights out here...I'd be driving a Prevost.

8 Mar 2014 - Wrapping up a week in Santa Fe visiting relatives and enjoying the super New Mexico style chili. The eating has really been great, and a family fried brought a sack of red chili pods over yesterday and taught DW how to make red chili enchilada sauce. Just can't buy this in the stores...very good stuff, but very spicy.

About of inch of snow overnight makes the area look beautiful and the Sangre de Cristo Mtns really look pretty in the distance.

Visited the Estrellas del Norte winery in Pojauque NM that is a conversion of the horse farm where DW grew up. Picked up a case of their Holy Mole red wine to share with our friends as we travel over the next year (and four bottles for our friend Jenn that we'll deliver in the Tetons in Sep). This unique wine has a touch of chocolate and red chili flavor in the cabernet mix of wine...mmmm!

Off to Goosenecks State Park in UT for a couple days dry camping on Monday.

    So Time Lies - Zion

21 Mar 2014 - We've been near Zion for nearly a week. En route we enjoyed Goosenecks State Park in Southeastern UT. Parked right by the canyon.

21 Mar 2014 - After Goosenecks, we moved on to Gouldings RV Resort in Monument Valley. This campground is operated by the Navajo and is the best campground in the area with full hookups. While at the campground, we took the full day tour of Mystery Valley (no access to the public) and saw numerous Anasazi ruins and petroglyphs. The guide cooked a hamburger lunch and then we moved on to Monument Valley. Both were absolutely beautiful and very informative to the history of the valley.

The downside, the tour is a little expensive ($108/person), and the ride is rough in the back of what could be a draftee truch with covered top and school bus seats. We relished a shower at the end because we were covered with red dust.

Last day in Monument Valley we drove to the Movi-Dugway road up the side of a 2000' mesa above Goosenecks...what a view...what a scary ride...definitely don't take your coach.

    Zion National Park

In a word ...AWESOME. So many hiking opportunities and the views, almost unbelievable. We've been here a week. In addition to seeing the main two entrances to the park, the second being Kolob Canyon off I-15, we travelled up the Kolob Terrace Road. This is mostly a non-Zion trip, but the ride and views are worth it and you can take one off shoot to Lava Point in the park (dirt road). My guess is that less than 5% of the people visiting Zion take this road...a real miss.

bryce Canyon Nation Park and Dixie Nat Forest

21 Mar 2014 - took a day trip to Bryce while still located at Zion River Ranch RV Resort. The trip up through Dixie National Forest, much covered by snowfall, may have been better than Bryce..but that is a stretch, too.

I was worried when we came out of Florida the last week of February that we might be arriving in Southern UT too early to really enjoy, but we've hit the area just as the trees are just coming out. it is fresh, uncrowded....and we've felt blessed and lucky to be in this part of the country at this time of the year.

Got a round of golf in at Hurricane UT yesterday. Sky Mountain is a great course, in good shape...a good bargain for a municipal course.

On to Las Vegas on the 23rd.

Hi there, I just enjoyed reading your posts. I'm groping my way around this site, think (hope) I just joined the Entegra forum, but your posts are the only ones that come up?
We currently own a 2011 Damon Tuscany, but my husband has had his heart set on an Entegra Aspire RBQ. He's been looking for one affordable a few years old, but when comparing the price to new there's not a lot of difference so he just ordered a brand new one - 2015 from Lazy Days, FL. We'll be leaving home in Maine in Feb. (if we're not snowed in) driving to FL to trade-in. I'm both nervous & excited. We have a lot to learn about the Entegra coach, hopefully buying new everything will work well? Can you tell me how to view other posts on this forum? Hope you're still enjoying your lives as f.t. RV'er's?
    Thank you for your time~
