Death Valley

When watching TV or movies or reading books, I've gotten the impression that the distance between LV and Reno, or LV and LA was relatively short. I mean, people are always jumping into their cars and a short time later are playing the slots. 'Tain't true.
I by-passed LV about mid-afternoon, on the look-out always for a fuel stop. I had been warned numerous times by fellow RVers not to stop in Tonapah for any reason. Well, guess what; I pulled into the casino parking lot in Tonopah at dusk-thirty, so had to stop. The Go and I passed a very peaceful night in that parking lot.
First and foremost on leaving the next morning headed for Reno was the fact that getting diesel had now become an imperative. There is NOTHING between LV and Reno except Death Valley. We went through one little spot with a service station, but no diesel. The next little spot had the same. The next little spot had no servce station. By this point I was beginning to hyperventilate. Finally, whizzing through a tiny burg, I spotted the lovely green handle on a pump at this old, run-down building. Got the rigged stopped and turn around and pulled up to the pump. The old lady running the place told me that I was so fortunate because the pump was broken the day before. I still could get only $75 of fuel, but this time I gratefully took it.
From that point until I reached Fallon, NV, the scenery deteriorated from worse to worser to worsetest. It even affected the Go. She was so antsy that I was stopping about every 30 min. or so to let her out to run. I began to feel pretty antsy, myself. The loneliness was overwhelming.
No cars passed me or met met. All I could see was flat, plantless desert and far, far away some snowcovered mountains. When we finally reached Fallon, I was exhausted, so pulled into an RV park and sat for 3 days doing laundry and a myriad of other chores.

I agree totally...A lot of people have NO idea of the size of the states out west. California alone is like 800 miles from end to end. And 156,000 sq miles in size
