Lazy days of summer

Posted 07-08-2010 at 07:38 AM by geaugeausmom

Summer in the South demands that one be lazy, laid back, and loose. Remember the stories of verandahs, fans and mint juleps? But, also, remember floor length petticoats and dresses with long sleeves and high necks; morning coats and cravats? How in thunder did they survive? The heat wave that has hit the East Coast this week is torture. I sit in my air-conditioned RV hardly moving because 2 air-conditioners can barely keep the heat bearable. From about 3 pm to about 6 pm, they are working hard to keep the temps inside below 80; and that's with all the shades down and curtains drawn (I feel like I'm in a cave).

I had to go to town yesterday--a chore that I hate under the best of conditions--and saw two bank temps at 107. The humidity is in the 90's, so it's like navigating in a sauna.

Poor Gogo wants to be outside as much as I do, but when I let her out, she turns around and comes right back inside. Then, she forgets how hot it is and wants to go out again. She hasn't run in days, so the lazer light gets a real work-out in the evening. Running in circles within the confines of the RV is not the best of exercise, but it's better than nothing. When the grandkids are here, she gives them hours of hysterical laughter. And, that, at least, keeps them off the dratted electronic stuff that numbs their minds.

Late evenings are the best part of the day. The shadows are long, and on top of this hill there is generally a breeze, so sitting outside after about 8pm or so is pleasant. It's still too hot to run around, so Gogo chases a frisbee or tennis ball a couple of times, then, comes to sit beside me and enjoy the outdoors.

The weather is making the squash and zucchini grow like crazy. Every day we pick a half bushel from two plants of each. The vines are hanging heavy with tomatoes that someday may turn red. Back in May we had more rain than Noah; now, we are having to water the garden and the flowers; the grass and fields are brown and sear. Who or what set the seasons in order? Floods when we don't need them, droughts when rain is necessary.

My thoughts turn to the poor who have no way to escape the heat, the elderly and sick and babies. In winter, one can don more clothing, blankets, etc., to help stay somewhat warm; but one cannot take off enough clothing to get cool; society demands that we wear a modicum of garments when in public view, but even total nakedness does not alleviate heat. I wonder how many heat related deaths will occur before summer is out.

Today I have to take the RV out to dump and to refill the propane. That will be my job of work for the day.

Try to stay cool.
