Medina Highpoint in Median TX (quick weekend trip)

Trip to Medina Highpoint.
We left last Thursday for a quick weekend to Medina Highpoint RV park in Medina, Texas. Medina is between Kerrville Texas and Bandera Texas smack in the middle of the Texas hill country. 1 hour west of Fredericksburg for the wine drinkers, 1 hours SW of San Antonio, 2 hours from Austin, 45 minutes off I10 from Kerrville.
Medina Highpoint is part of the Katherines Landing RV Park Group. We have stayed at the Katherines Landing in ARK and it was by all description AMAZING.
Medina Highpoint was not bad, but it needed attention and hopefully the Katherines Landing Group will be doing renovations making it nicer.
The park is right off HWY 16. Coming from Kerrville you need to pay very VERY VERY close attention to a truck bypass route to Bandera or you will in short have a freaking heart attack on the road. If you miss the truck bypass TURN AROUND.. unless you are under 35’ then you will just white knuckle the trip but you will make it if you don’t waste your clutch.
It is a 2 lane hairpin switch back road that gains altitude fast, has no shoulders, tight lanes, oncoming fast cars (Lamborghinis, Ferraris and more Vetes than you can shake a stick at), Harleys, crotch rockets and the occasional redneck with a big trailer…..all going well over the posted speed limit of 15 and all taking 100% of both lanes. If you have not experienced near head on collisions, please, enjoy this scenic route. The views are amazing. The bi-pass turn-off is less than 500 yards from downtown Kerrville.
Once you take the bypass, the route will take you easily back to 16, bypassing the crazy part of the road easily keeping you on safer passage.

This was nicely shaded by the late afternoon, 100 yards to the pool and had no traffic or noise to speak of. The head in spots were easy to navigate too, pull in, back out and had adequate additional vehicle parking for the toads. If you are pulling a bike trailer, get a pull through site in the middle. Slightly less shade but worth it for the space. Several other people had bike trailers that stayed attached the entire time we were there. They unloaded and road the amazing roads and still had room to park multiple bikes on/I their area.
Pro’s
Nice large spots, very nice pool and hot tub, cool hiking path, fuel, Gas and Diesel on site, small so it was not cray crowded or loud, amazing surrounding (in a valley in the hill country), super friendly staff, nice concrete pads by parking spots and large tables, nice fire rings with grilling tops for cooking, 15 minutes to Medina so you can get in the river easily (lots of friendly local places to swim), The apple store has 5 LB apple pies (seriously 5 pound pies) that are AWESOME,,,,not much else in Medina…45minutes to Lost Maples State Park, 45 minutes to Medina Lake, 30 minutes to Bandera or Kerrville but the drive is great to either.
Con’s
30 min to Kerrville or Bandera (not much in Medina—Will get back to this shortly) so if you forget something or need anything you will be driving. Older park so the spots are partially gravel, dog park is not secured with fences, absolutely NO=NADA+ZIPPO cell service (we use Verizon), basic cable only about 18 channels, stickers so don’t go barefoot, RV spot we were in leaned forward so stinky slinky would not drain with out assistance. Had to use 2 sections or slinky pipe to make the connection, almost needed longer freshwater hose. I pulled in deep so I could have backed up some if needed.
Overall
I would recommend to people that want to experience the hill country without the bustle of town. I can really see this place getting much better over time. Not a lot for kids to do. The playground was Ok, the pool was very nice but not a lot of kids while we were there.
Back to the trip;
Me, co-pilot, navigator and 2 dogs made the drive in 2.5 hours. Stopped to kill time at a rest area. We took, mountain bikes, kayaks and paddle board for biking and water fun.
Day 1 we shot over to Lost Maples State park. They have spaces for up to 50’s with 50amp service with a pump out station close to camp sites. Super cheap and very nice. We would go back just for this park. Lost Maples has several hiking paths and swimming areas. Be prepared for 1 to 6-mile hikes in the heat. Plan accordingly. Would recommend going in the fall for the Maples changing colors and cooler temps.
Left the park and went to Kerrville to get some groceries than back to the RV park for the pool and some K-bobs.. Steak and veggies on the grill with red wine. That was a good evening. Started raining about 3 am and we got about 2.5-3 inches very quickly. Made for a cool next day.
Day 2, got up cooked some bacon and eggs then we ran over to Bandera and watched the gunfighters shoot out, shopped in the historic district and ate lunch at the O.S.T restaurant. It was worth the wait. Left Bandera and went to Medina. We stopped at the Apple store that I mentioned earlier. 5 LB pies… seriously they are as big as your head…Had homemade pie and homemade ice cream and spoke with the girls there about local swimming holes on the river. They told us about 3 spots that were great for kids so ran back to the park got our swimsuits and the dogs and headed to the river to cool off. We ended up at the Medina River in Media for the rest of the afternoon. Super friendly locals hanging out at the low water crossing on the river, easy parking easy water access, wish we brought chairs to plop down in the river while the kids and dogs played. Lots of kids and dogs here….There are some spots you can drop kayaks in and paddle down if you have a ride back. This is also something we may do in the future.
We get back the site about 630 and the girls go straight to the pool while I start cooking chicken and grilled veggies.
End the day working on and finishing a 1000-piece puzzle. The next morning, we wake up to pure, complete, utter silence. No fans, no AC, no light NADA. Wreck in Bandera hit a pole and took out a power line. AAAAHHH, sooooo sad for all the 5-ers, we start up the gennie and coffee was served. My wife was happy, my life was happy.
Whip up some breakfast. Girls take the dogs for a walk while I button up the bus and we head out for home.
Made it to Fredericksburg for lunch. Ate a Campo Azul on 16. If you stop here, you can circle the block and park on the street beside the restaurant on the Verizon side. Big wide streets with enough room our our 40G and our jeep. Awesome lunch and 1 hour later we are in the driveway of the house.
I have learned that immediately upon arriving home, strip the beds, clean the bus, unload everything wash the outside and get it 100% ready for the next trip before you put her away.
We are ready to roll out in a week or so. Any suggestions?

WOW, nice informative read and were always heading out I-10 and I did not know about this park, so thanks, as I'm sure this is a must-see U-turn and all. As for head-on's that I would like to avoid. wonderful fun and informative read, thanks for sharing. Looks like a good place to stop, I am wondering about restaurants outside the park?
