Redwolf Journeys - West Texas - Sept 2020 #2
We had a great stay down at Maverick Ranch RV Resort in Lajitas, TX. It's conveniently located between Big Bend NP and Big Bend Ranch SP. It's also a much better RV park than the on in BBNP. The park was maybe a quarter full, and unless you were with friends they kept everyone spaced out (I kinda remember them doing that on our last visit 10 years ago, so maybe it's normal policy). Lots of amenities, including a wonderful pool. (We didn't use this time due to Covid, but the wife was looking wistfully at it - we were in site 52 next to it).
We drove the Jeep out on TX-170 (aka the River Road) and hiked the Closed Canyon and Hoodoos. Closed Canyon is a nice slot canyon that you can hike in for about a mile, and the Hoodoos is further west.
The next two days we were in BBNP with the Jeep, specifically to drive down the dirt roads we hadn't been able to the last visit 10 years ago...aaand they were nearly all closed due to heavy rains the week before. Grapevine Hills and Dagger Flat roads were open, so we did both of those - fun!
One recommendation if you go to BBNP - download the "Just Ahead" tour guide app that's available for both iPhone and Android. It's free for Big Bend, and gives descriptions of places as you drive up to them, as well as history, and directions for the major intersections. Kat and I loved it - it was like being on a tour bus. It also covered the roads outside the park in Brewster County.
So, I mentioned the rain that the area had received the week before. The desert was in bloom. Flowers everywhere. Key were the creosote with yellow, and the sage with lavender.
On the drive out from Lajitas to Kickapoo Caverns, the rolling desert terrain was mile after mile of lavender.
