Buttoning up for the winter

Posted 10-26-2012 at 12:55 AM by riverbender

Well I jinxed the park when I reported that no one took out the new gate or ran over a power box. They both happened on the very last weekend of the year. The most expensive part of the gate, the reader was hit during check in and a power box was hit during check out. Unfortunately, no one reported hitting the gate, although someone did come in two days later to say they saw it happen, but had no idea who it was. The power box reported it, I wonder if it was because he needed help getting the trailer off it? Actually, he camps with us often and I think he would have told us anyway. Estimates put it in the $1700.00 range for repair. There was damage to the power lines so we will have to replace all three legs in both directions as well as the ground wires, the water line and the box itself. Fortunately, because he did report it to us, he also gave us his insurance contact and they sent out an adjuster, so hopefully we can agree on a price to get the job done. Why did I ever open my big mouth?
There's a storm brewing so we spent a good part of the week trying to get trees and limbs down so the high winds don't take them first. We don't want a repeat of last years damage.
We also cleaned the snack bar, took inventory, read the electric meters, dismantled some of the haunted house, took all the canoes out of the river and stowed them, cleaned off all the rental unit roofs and did whatever we need to do that requires water because on Saturday we close down the wells and blow all the water out of the system. Hard to imagine that we are only 5 strong and two of us are office staff. In my down time, I also babysit my grandson, write my newsletter, do the electric bills, answer the phones, and prepare the store and office for shutdown. I need a nap! I have to tell ya, I am really looking forward to the Tampa Supershow, I may have to work at it, but it will be warmer and a welcomed change of scenery! It helps the time pass because once this place is closed up completely, it gets boring really fast, then I start missing all the friendly faces of our campers!
Here's hoping you all have a safe and warm winter!
