06 Tour 40KD Hitch Tongue Weight

Howdy all. My question is on tongue weight. The owners manual states my hitch is rated at 10K lbs but my tongue weight is only 500 lbs. My coach is in storage in SOCAL and I'm in the Philippines. I plan to order a car hauler before I return so it will be ready when I get back. If I remember correctly the hitch itself says the max tongue weight is 1000 or 1500 lbs. From what I have read about normal tongue weight it should be between 10% and 15% of the gross trailer weight. That would be between 1000 lbs and 1500 lbs of a trailer loaded
with a gross total weight ok 10K. Anyone out there with an 06 Tour 40KD that can confirm what i think I remember.

The 2006 Tour Brochure (accessible via Brochure Archive) confirms that the tongue weight limit is 500 lbs.

That also matches the 500 lbs tongue weight limit on my 2005 Vectra which also has a 10,000 lb hitch.

Although the hitch itself might support a higher tongue weight Winnebago says that the hitch/chassis assembly will not.

Which I find funny, my 09 Horizon on Maxum chassis has 10k hitch 1k tongue rating...yet WBGO says 500# tongue. When I ask what has changed on the chassis from 09 to now on the same chassis that allows 1k tongue all I get is crickets chirping, both from Freightliner and WBGO

I read through the 06 to 09 Tour brochures. They all say 10K hitch but 500 lbs max vertical tongue weight. Then as i dug further they refer you to the chassis manufacturer for more info. The Freightliner Evolution (XL) chassis manual says to maintain the tongue weight between 10% and 15% of the trailer weight. That pretty much matches what is listed on the actual hitch. I asked Winnebago about it on line but have not received a reply. If i do I will post it here.

Here is Winnebago's response to my query.

to me

Hello Galen,

The correct rating is 500 lbs.

Kind Regards,

Thank you for being a customer!

So that really puts me in a bind. A 20' enclosed car hauler with my car in it will probably put me in a 750 lb tongue weight range. A 20' open car hauler would be close to that also. A Trailer Toad "http://www.trailertoad.com/"would help but runs close to $5K and adds about 5 or 6 ft in length. The trailer and Trailer Toad would put my cost over $10K. At that price might as well by a used decent condition flat towable toad. The other option would be a Tuff Tow "http://www.tufftow.com/". I think the Tuff Tow is considerably cheaper and adds no extra length but have not found many reviews about it. Also the small tires on the Tuff Tow would worry me. Luckily I still have about 3 months before I return to the states and hit the road. If anyone out there has heard of the Tuff Tow and can speak to its reliability please add your comments.
